Hi guys...... would anyone out there have photo's of avengers being scrapped at Rukuhia? Have seen a couple but they are pretty poor images.. A friend of mine has a 1/32 trumpeter kit that he has given me and i would like to make a display of a partly stripped or wrecked avenger..... i know that sounds a bit morbid, but fun i think.

Speaking of Rukuhia (sort of) those Ventura wheels are still (as of two weeks ago) outside the the old gas station 3Km north of Otorohanga (I may of said Te Awamutu last time) on Hwy 3. Looking at the map it could be near Kiokio. Traveling south on Hwy 3 you pass a "hot rod" ute on a pole as a sign just beforehand.

There was another one recently on the forum showing a frontal view but I can't recall which thread. I guess if you search for Rukuhia...

Hi, Very busy at the moment so not much time to do any more research. I saw the ventura axel thing just before Christmas near waitomo if I remember, quite impressive to see. I am interested to hear if anyone has any info of engines from Rukuhia used postwar by farmers in the area, I still have hope there must still be engines tucked around waikato but finding them would just be a matter of luck or knocking on every single farmers door! Attatched are some photos from last year of the scrapping area

In all the years ive been looking in guys sheds in the Waikato for goodies, i only have ever found one tigermoth engine. a friend of mine picked up a radial engine out Matangi somewhere which he still has. i will go and photograph it during the week. i have seen at least four tank radial engines in the waikato. the photo shows one we had a couple of years ago. im not sure what farmers would use radial engines for. i know alot of the v12's went into boats

Possibly they bought them to strip wiring, linkages and hose tubing out of to use when fixing other machinary, as it was like gold after the war to get such parts I'm told.
That's a nice looking engine Mike, are tank radials able to be used in aircraft or is it too much of a difference? I'm keen to hear more about the Matangi engine.

Stu Tantrums Dr 1 used a de-rated Continental W 670 (?) out of a tank. F/S at Woodbourne, Chris somebody, did the work on it.

Interesting Nev. Thanks for that info. I wonder if any aeroplanes are flying with tank engines that have actual tank warfare combat history.

I doubt very much if any of our tanks came back to NZ, in fact I doubt if any ever left with the troops, I think they got them when they arrived wherever.

I'm pretty sure that the Third Division took its NZ-based Matildas up to the Pacific, and (perhaps) brought them back when they withdrew. Not certain, but that is the impression I have.
I was thinking however in terms of recently imported tank engines coming in from abroad, perhaps now making it into aeroplanes. Or the same thing happening overseas.

Well Russ Ward is keen to get his Guiberson 1020 Diesel radial into an aircraft at some point. this was out of an M3 Stuart tank and it still has the tank cooling baffles attached. not a lot of difference installation wise, but "parts will be a bastard..." certainly our Wartime Beech 17 gained a Continental out of a Sherman tank at some stage - must have been some Shermans around, or at least parts for them.

We had 381 Stuart tanks in NZ from 1943 to 1955. all these tanks had Radial engines, so there's a good possibility some were kept with the thought of putting them into aircraft. The engine in my photos we fitted to a Sherman tank. It was alot of fun to drive but was extremely thirsty on gas.

This is the engine my mate found out at Matangi. he said an old guy had it and he liked to tinker with it. it has several of the cylinders removed which my mate has.
