Found this old photo of ZK-AVM at Stewart Island (so I'm told) when going through some old family photos last week. Posted here as a matter of interest .... Cheers, Stu.

Great photo, thanks for sharing it Stu. Any ideas as to the date of the photo? Early 50's?

Great atmospheric photo there. Definately Stewart Island, I was there last year and it hasn't changed much. It's a lovely place, no way near as feral as I thought it would be (the only feral people I saw were the DOC workers ) the bird song when you get off the ferry is overwhelming.

Great photo, thanks for sharing it Stu. Any ideas as to the date of the photo? Early 50's? Not sure of the date although if I was to guess (and based on the photos it was found with), I'd say the 1950s. Stewart Island sounds like it'd be a nice place to visit at some stage. The closest I've ever got was to stand "at the bottom of the South Isaland" and look across the water toward it although this being back in 1969 I have only a very vague recollection of it. Cheers, Stu.

Does anyone know where ZK-AVM and ZK-CFA are these days?
Presumably they are still in one piece?

One of them (I think it must have been one of those two anyway) was outside at Ardmore until a few years back, not sure whether it's still on the field - if so it must have moved indoors.

I never got to go for a flight in a Widgeon.
It was one of those things I had on the to-do list, but I procrastinated too long and then none of them were flying commercially any more.
I did however go for a flight from Mechanics Bay in one of Sea Bee Air's Grumman Goose amphibians. Although I cannot recall which one it was all these years later apart from the fact it had radial engines, so it could have been either ZK-DFC or ZK-ENY. It must have been about 1979 or 1980 if my memory serves me correctly.

The Widgeons were pretty rough when I flew in them early 1970s. One abiding memory was the panel had numerous empty holes in it where instruments had been removed and not replaced. Mind, on the flight Mechanics Bay - Waiheke Island I don't think they got above 500' for the entire trip.
Last I heard the surviving NZ Widgeons were stored at the Harnish rural property in Whitford.

I thought AVM was sold? I have a photo of it sitting forlornly at Ardmore with a For Sale sign in the window taken around 2006.

I had a flight in ZK- BAY many many years ago with Fred Ladd.We were on a magic carpet flight I think it was called which was a ten minute flight over Auckland, we were just turning onto final at Mechanics Bay when Fred got a call saying a small boat had overturned off an island out in the Gulf. Fred turned around and asked if any of us were in a hurry to go(what a silly question) so we spent the next hour looking for people in the water.I believe two bodies were found the next day. Anyway here's a photo of a smart looking CFA taken at Ardmore 20/11/92

A later photo of ZK AVM in its Sea Bee Air colours and after changing the Ranger Engines. Location, Mechanics Bay, Auckland. Anybody know anything about the Sikorsky Helo in the background? Looks Like an S-61. I never knew any of these ever flew in NZ. Maybe offshore oil exploration support?

The Widgeon is my dream aircraft and if one ever came up for sale again I would be into it like a flash. Learning to fly it can come later, first up would be a rating on my AMEL
