I noted in a recent Air Forces Monthly where South Africa not only used their Gripen's, but their Hawk trainers during the World Cup matches for the Air Security/Sovereignty mission. The Hawk was fitted with an Aden Cannon and utilized data link radar picture and GCI for intercepts if needed.
Could the MB's be fitted with some form of similar kit for at least a token use if needed?
I understand that there could be a debate's about a more robust Air Combat Force, but one would think that at the very least the Air Security/Sovereignty mission would be something The NZ Government would want to have some sort of answer for in their deck of playing cards. Who knows, in the future could that be a make or break thing when some organizing body looks at NZ for some major (income producing) event? NZ could ask a friendly nation to cover it for them, but that sure would be a tough thing to swallow I think.

Good point re the RWC next year. Notwithstanding the ineffectiveness of the USAF preventing the 9/11 carnage, all you need is a copycat terrorist hijacking even a relatively small aircraft, and NZ would be helpless to react.

Rugby is a civilised game, unlike soccer it doesn't have the hooliganism that would need crowd control from fighter jets.

The Government is clearly waiting for you lot to decide on which aircraft we need before proceeding with releasing the plan. Yes, I can just see Wayne Mapp and John Key sitting in front of their computers in the Beehive, and logging into WoNZ to get some tips on what a future NZDF should look like, and what direction it should be heading in. By the time they'd finished noting down all that has been posted here, I think they'd end up with this: RNZAF -1SQN: 20 B-1B bombers. 2SQN: 14 JAS-39 Gripen fighters. 3SQN: 15 NH-90 and 10 A109 helicopters. 5SQN: 6 P-8 maritime patrol aircraft. 14SQN: 12 BAe 100 series Hawk trainers. 40SQN: 8 C130J transports. 41SQN: 8 CN-235/95 transports. 42SQN: 5 Q400 vip/general transports. 75SQN: 14 F-15I fighter/attack aircraft. Farm basic training off to a private mob, and re-equip PTS/CFS with PC-21/T-6B/Tacano type turbine trainers. Army -Update all light and medium weapons. New anti-tank capability. New artillery. 12 new Main Battle Tanks. Sell half the LAVS, and replace them with something far more useful to the boys on the ground, 14 armed recon helicopters. RNZN -Ditch Canterbury, and replace it with a real military designed and built amphibious capability. Name the real ship HMNZS New Zealand. Form an expeditionary unit of RNZN Marines, with their own air support in the form of helicopters (NH-90) and some surplus refurbished AV-8Bs/GR-9 Harriers to operate off HMNZS New Zealand, until F-35Bs are available. Buy one, maybe two, new frigates (name one HMNZS Canterbury), and extra off-shore patrol boats. Then - look out world, the NZDF is back! ;D

I went to Devonport yesterday and there was a Cook Straight interisland ferry at the Navy base, so maybe they're refitting it as HMNZS New Zealand Craig?

20 B-1Bs is a bit over the top,the rest looks pretty good though.

This alone would exceed the NZDF's 2010/11 budget by around $2bn... ;D

I dont think we have the infrastructure at three bases to hold all of Corsair's suggestions Not to mention the approximately 11,200 personnel required to operate them (based roughly on current airframe/staff ratio). Nice thought but no

They were a bunch of idiot radicals, it will never happen again in this country - rugby is professional now, they'd have the radicals killed before it ever got that far.

Come on guys; you have to do like Rob Muldoon did - Think Big. ;D Rob Muldoon eh! Those wre the good/bad all days. Back in early 84 those ex RAN A4's showed up without much comment. It just happened. Imagine the fuss if the Government bought 10 used strike aircraft today. We used to consider ourselves pretty much players back then. What the hell happened?

You are probably corect about the roll on roll off ferry Dave. It's what our navy buys when they want a transport ship. Then spend years fixing throw away and buy another of the same.

Here's a thought. In terms of major new equipment/upgrades what have we bought in recent years that makes sense? Sea Sprites perhaps. The ANZAC frigates are probably OK but the numbers destroy their viability as stand alone force. Is the other new navy stuff sorted and is it capable in our waters?
