LONELY BATTALION
(New Zealand Press Association)
PALMERSTON NORTH, October 13. Some 2000 troops are taking part in exercise Reflex Two, but to make the operation more realistic, simulated troops, equipment and aircraft are supplementing each force.
A press party touring the area on Saturday took the wrong turning and arrived at a junction of several roughly graded tracks. A soldier guarding this junction was asked what he was doing. The reply was: “I am a battalion guarding these crossroads."
Some time later the Governor-General (Sir Bernard Fergusson) noticed a group of soldiers sitting on the ground and taking no interest in the battle raging nearby. He asked the men what they were doing and learned that they were simulated dead. “And when did you die?” he asked one man. “Just a few minutes ago, sir." replied the soldier “Congratulations.” said Sir Bernard Fergusson.

CO-OPERATION OF SERVICES
Governor-General Impressed
(NZ Press Association) PALMERSTON N. Oct. 13.
Army and Air Force cooperation before the last war was appalling, said the Governor-General (Sir Bernard Fergusson) yesterday when addressing troops in the field near Lake Taupo during a lull in operations in the Army and Air Force exercise, “Reflex 2.”
“I am happy to say this cooperation situation improved tremendously during the war,” said Sir Bernard Fergusson. “If it hadn’t, then I do not think I would be here talking to you now.
“This whole exercise is one of co-operation between the two services. What I have seen today only emphasises just how effective this cooperation can be against the enemy.”
Sir Bernard Fergusson told the troops he had “an enormous impression” of them. They were "tremendously fit" This sort of physical state was to be encouraged. It was good advertising, he said.
