Holy Baz, you did nothing else that afternoon except sit back and yarn with the fellow. You had time to get the whole life story and still discuss the merits of your trailer. We have all seen the pics don't forget. Hmmm, Then again I may be getting confused with fellows waving off Austers on trailers.. there have been so many of them.

Well after a week involving a break-in and nearly running over a small child (no injuries but a change of underwear for both of us!)a much needed Auster fix was called for. As this photo shows I'm masking up the frame so that the areas that need touching up can be rubbed back primed and painted. Not an easy job doing a tube frame anything! I also laid out the complete brake pedal system I removed from BBZ and compared the main shafts the pedals attach to see if they were identical whcih they were. The reason for doing this is that Anthony's brake system consists of two brake pedals...............and nothing else. I popped round for a cup of tea and we trial fit the two shafts to Anthony's T7 Auster and they fit. So now the plan is for me to remove the last of BRA's brake pedal system, make up two complete "kits" and give one to Anthony. (Ray I haven't forgotten you, if there are any left over bits they are yours!)

Baz, And yes, that photo of BBZ waving its dainty little legs in the air IS at Harewood - note the Airwork hangar and the water tower - the Port Hills are hidden in the background murk (not that unusual). Also no sign of the Deep Freeze hangar, so pre-1960 (or whenever it was that the latter building went up.) David D

Thanks David. Yes Pre-1960 does make sense as she is wearing her 1950s silver colour scheme, however the two accidents recorded with the club say 1961 and 1960. The 1960 one said heavy landing and undercarriage collapse but both legs seem ok so I thought this photo was most likely the taxiing accident in 1961.

As is usually the case winter has seen a bit of a slow down. To make things a bit easier i set up the LPG heater in my garage at home along with a desk. To help you I have labeled some items in this photo: The other day I was out at the hangar rummaging through my parts (steady!) to help another Auster rebuilder. He has ZK-BQL which was NZ1701 with the Air Force which suffered a take off accident so he needed a few parts. One item he was after was a set of flying wires for one side of the tailplane. These go from the top and bottom of the fin to the top and underside of the tip of the horizontal stabiliser. My thought was I had seen a set when I bought BBZ so maybe I could give him the set from BRA. Not wanting to part with something and then find I shouldn't have I decided to lay out the flying wires from both aircraft. I was disappointed to find the set that came with BBZ had been stripped back to bare metal and then put in a plastic bag with no protection (like Inox). Also two of them were not straight. And as BRA only had a straight set for one side (as one side got bent in the crash)I only really had a complete set for BBZ. Further inspection today after a good scotch brite to remove any surface rust has revealed some pitting on some of the wires which will in all likelihood make them unusable. A couple of them are only lightly pitted and maybe ok but I'll have to get them certified as airworthy. Here's the worst example: Fortunately most of the rod ends cleaned up ok and should be ok to re-use. And if not you can still buy new ones (at a price!)

That "pitting" you show looks more like agglomerated zinc - lumpy galv imperfections in the surface coating. But I am NOT viewing it "live" in natural 3D, so it could be a trick on the eyes...

That "pitting" you show looks more like agglomerated zinc - lumpy galv imperfections in the surface coating. But I am NOT viewing it "live" in natural 3D, so it could be a trick on the eyes... No coating would not have been that thick if it actually had a coating. If it was anodised it would barely be a thousandth of an inch. Don't forget this is a steel rod only about 8mm in diameter. Emailed the photo to my engineer and he said nah, dump it replace with new. I hear and obey!

Upon further visual inspection, yes it does look like pitting, any surface irregularities like that definitely become stress razors and can quickly lead to failure with fatigue - wise decision to replace.

Hi Dave, I am not at all sure about your Auster but did you see how the trailer turned out. There is a big part of your cattle-stop in the mix there. The sheet of ply that Jodie and myself carted back on the quad bike and trailer. It moved about a little on the trip back south but it is firmly attached to where it is now currently sitting.

Firstly here is the Operation BRA thread: rnzaf.proboards.com/thread/17564/operation-braBRA hasn't changed too much since you saw her last although i now have the front floor boards out as I am using them in BBZ. Anthony (who is rebuilding a T7 Auster) is going to benefit from most of the brake system from BRA. I'm also going to be taking the fuel tanks out of the wings so I can preserve them and put them somewhere safe!
