Great photos gents! I too had a great day enjoying the sights and sounds!! Only two things ruined my day: 1) the blankty blank battery on my camera ran out (supect too much video footage) so sorry guys, you will have to wait until the battery charges for me to post anything 2) Morons who kept pushing in front of my familiy and I to watch and we were at the yellow barrier!!! Other than the F/A 18 and C 17 there were two other cool high lights, one the UH 1H dropping the under slung vehicle to go crunch on the airfield, totally unexpected, and the Red Checkers doing donuts in front of the crowd with the smoke going ;D ;D Our folks did a splendid job and it just goes to show what they can do. Going home was a action filled time especially getting off the base (rear exit) cars were grid locked in about 5-6 streams and two Air Force personnel were directing the traffic out. This women who obviously thought she was a some one, went up to them and gave them an earful about the snarl up (they were doing a great job). A credit to them, they took it in their stride and kept on doing their job (it still took her ages to get out , serves her right!! :

Don't you just love those types! One guy did this to me at Avalon last weekend, and I just made sure I leaned out as he was getting ready to take photos, and he got the hint soon enough. Believe it or not, I actually don't like doing that kind of thing, but when I've made the effort to get in early and find a spot on the fenceline, I don't appreciate latecomers who try and push in where there isn't a space big enough for a human to squeeze into. By the way, great photos guys - keep them coming.

Awesome thread, and awesome photos everyone. Stu, I reckon you've done very well with your shots mate. And Errol, I really like that photo of Gavin Trethewey taxiing the Dragonfly!! I posted a few of my comments about the airshow on this thread rnzaf.proboards43.com/index.cgi?action=display&board=airshow&thread=8748&page=2The only traffic issues we found on the way in were the roadworks on Hosonville road holding up the works, and we turned into Trigg Road only to find it was a car park so u-turned and went down to Brigham Creek Road where we got down much faster. Then, having media passes, we were filtered out of the jam and into the parking area for special people, so our "traffic nightmare" was all of about 7 minutes, most of which we were entertained by the Hercules, the Red Checkers and the Boeing 757. I was most impressed to see the historic sight of the Red Checkers and the Warbirds Harvard Team in formation. What a wonderful idea. Especially as one team fathered the other. The nine-ship of CT-4E's was impressive too. I must make a special mention of thanks to Bruce Cooke for loaning me with a microphone for my filming, Stu Russell for loaning me another microphone so the actual thing we were filming was viable, and to Les Stockley for his hospitality and his generosity in running me into town after the show to get the bus home. It was nice to also catch up with Errol, Marcus (the South African one) and his wife, and Damon, who helped me out with filming after Mike had to leave. Thanks too to Anna Sussmilch of the RNZAF Public Relations for helping sort us out access to various things today. It was good to eet Anna too. I also bumped into a few old Air Force mates and met my old drill corporal, Kavae Tamariki, who 20 years ago was training me at GSTS and now is the new Public Relations Officer of the RNZAF. It was nice to catch up and chat. It's also a great view for filming an airshow from on top of the Headquarters building, I must say.

Great photos Marcus, you've really caught the action well!! That Herc take off shot with the nosewheel retracting is awesome!
I cannot make it to that open day, I have a meeting with some people from Auckland. No doubt others will be there from the forum though.

Top shots guys- here are a few of my own. I tried to keep my eyes on the planes this year, rather than my lens- as in previous shows it felt as though I'd missed all the action, so most of my shots are ground based only, of the show craft taxing, landing and taking off. Iriqouis: C17: The King Air- which performed on in a new formation along with four CT-4's, one on each wing and two directly behind it- I was talking to a Huey pilot later in the day and found out that all RNZAF helecopter pilots actually train on both the fixed wing aircraft mentioned in this display, before moving onto the Sioux, then the UH-1!! "Pride of the fleet" Terribly angled shots of the C-130... And the P3: -And that's the last of my shots. I wasn't close enough to the crowd line to capture any decent snaps of 'Formation Thunder' or the F-18 unfortunately, although I'm expecting many others have. The reason for this being that due to an amazing feat of luck, my name was drawn out of the 'Win a flight in a Huey' competition box, and at 3.45, I had to go attend a briefing down at the other end of the apron (hence the unusual perspective of the last shot of the Orion). I've got a few really cool vids and pics from the Huey flight after the show that I've posted at NZFF. This was definitely the best airforce open day show that I've been to out of the last three years. Look forward to seeing more of everyone else's snaps!

I took around 650 photos yesterday, so it'l be a while before i post them, lots of favourites to pick out. ;D In the meantime ive wipped up a highlights video (above) and will be drip feeding individual clips and videos on my youtube account & website. Truly an awesome show! Traffic to and from the show but hey we werent angry. We avoided some waiting by looking at the ground/static displays we couldnt have a decent look at during all the flying. Highlights definatly the 757,C17,F18 and the 3 Warbird Jets.

One of the Orions in the Kiwi Thunder formation looked very heavily weathered. It looked superb!! You don't normally see our Orions all matt and dirty. I guess it is the next one for the big overhaul.
I have to say that even though the Orions and Hercules are very old, I am actually glad they are being given an upgrade rather than being replaced because they are still awesome to see, and extremely impressive workhorses. The way they are displayed is always worth seeing. I also think the Boeing 757's of the RNZAF are the nicest looking and coolest jet airliners in the world.

Great photos from everyone. Mine are pretty much the same, I've put a link below. I thought it was an excellent show, and the Air Force did itself proud. Loved the FA/18, we had quite a long chat with one of the pilots. Nice fella, and he had some interesting info. I just wish there was some way they could streamline the traffic to and from Whenuapai, but it's not a biggie. See web album here

Cool stuff so far guys, interesting figuring out where everyone was on the line by the angles. I secured a spot front and centre at about 0900 and stayed the whole day.
Unfortunately missed the forum meet as I was already on the road when it was agreed and my accomodations (tenting in Orewa) didn't have any internet access. 'Twas a pity, as I enjoy meeting the people behind the voices here.
Since I just walked in the door after getting back to the 04 from the 09, and I'm a bit knackered, I'll post add my pictures to the melange tomorrow. Plus the camera battery is flat and I haven't even had a proper look at the 'take' yet.
BTW, did anyone else see the shadow of a transiting B767 or B777 (definitely a widebody twin) traverse the cloud deck during the Yak display? Not worth tryng to photograph but it sure looked cool.

Great photos everyone.
Sam, as far as I'm aware there was no forum meet. I'm told that just before the allotted time the RNZAF took the Sioux and Iroquois away from the agreed meeting point and no-one knew where it was!! As I had predicted, I wasn't able to go along as I was busy working (filming) but I did catch up with several forumites through the day which was nice.
Colin Hunter makes a great suggestion on another thread that next time the meet up happens just after the last display, while all the public are trying to get out the gate. It makes perfect sense, and we'll have to remember this for future air shows.
