Sad news If the reports are to be believed, thankfully nobody was injured - it's always easier to rebuild an aircraft than a human being. www.nzherald.co.nz/nz/news/article.cfm?c_id=1&objectid=10613213A two-seater spitfire has crashed at Ardmore airport, south of Auckland. Fire Service shift manager Jaron Phillips confirmed the World War II plane had crashed but said no one was injured. "Airport staff are currently liaising with the owner of the aircraft for its removal off the runway," Mr Phillips said. - NZHERALD STAFF

WWII Spitfire fighter plane in second crashBy CLIO FRANCIS, MICHAEL FIELD AND DAVID GADD - Stuff.co.nz | 1:03PM - Thursday, 03 December 2009CRASH SCENE: The damaged Spitfire lies off the runway at Ardmore Airport. — JOHN SELKIRK/Stuff.co.nz.An Auckland man has survived his second crash in his priceless WWII fighter plane in less than a year.
The Spitfire plane crash landed at Auckland's Ardmore airport at 11.50 this morning.
The plane — one of only two in the country — is owned by local man Doug Brooker, who imported the two seater aircraft last year.
It is Mr Brooker and the plane's second crash this year; on January 15 it suffered a heavy forced landing on Hood Aerodrome, near Masterton.
Just after today's crash Mr Brooker told Stuff.co.nz: "I don't feel like talking right now".
It is understood the plane's propeller, undercarriage and some fuel lines were damaged in the crash.
Mr Brooker was not injured in the crash.
The Spitfire bounced as it came in to land at Ardmore, causing the under carriage to collapse and the plane skidded for approximately 50 metres on its belly along the tarmac landing strip and came to rest on the grass, Senior Sergeant Peter Raynes said.
It is now angled with its nose down, propeller smashed and the undercarriage crumpled beneath as two mechanics work to ensure the engine has completely shut down.
Raynes said the pilot was very shaken up but able to walk away uninjured.
He has left the scene and was being looked after by friends.
Police have secured the scene while civil aviation begin their investigation.
Airport staff were liaising with the owner of the aircraft, painted in RAF desert colours with the markings of FL-A, for its removal from the runway.www.stuff.co.nz/national/3123771/WWII-spitfire-fighter-plane-crash____________________________________________________________________ Multi-million dollar spitfire crashesThe New Zealand Herald with NZPA | 1:12PM - Thursday, December 03, 2009SLIGHTLY BENT: The rare two seater Spitfire at Ardmore Airport after today's crash. — Photo: NZPA.A rare two seater Spitfire fighter has been damaged in what has been called an embarrassing landing accident at Ardmore Airport, south of Auckland, this morning.
The Spitfire, worth several million dollars, ran off the end of the runway when it landed at 11.50am today, damaging the propeller and its undercarriage.
Fire Service shift manager Jaron Phillips confirmed the World War II plane had crashed but said no one was injured.
"Airport staff are currently liaising with the owner of the aircraft for its removal off the runway," Mr Phillips said.
The TR9 Spitfire, one of only a handful in the world with two seats, was not badly damaged. It is believed its owner Doug Brooker was the pilot.
"It is easy enough to repair, it just takes time," said Peter Haughton from the Warbirds Society at Ardmore.
Mr Haughton told NZPA the accident happened as the Spitfire came into land and the runway at Ardmore was blocked for some time until it could be removed.
"The propeller hit the ground and it was damaged so it's not a crash at all.
It is a bit of a landing accident that is all. No one was hurt.
"It has broken the propeller and hasn't done the undercarriage much good either.
"The wind was in the process of changing. It is now blowing the other way so that probably contributed to it (the accident).
"It is sitting on its belly beside the runway on the grass."
Mr Brooker bought the Spitfire about two years ago after it was modified in America from a single seater to a two-seater — one of only five in the world.
Mr Haughton said the aircraft could be worth more than $3 million.
It arrived in New Zealand on September 11 last year, and was painted in RAF desert colours with the markings of a Mk IX flown by a New Zealand Squadron Leader Colin Gray, when based in Tunisia in mid-1943.
It was the second accident since the plane arrived in New Zealand having suffered damage during a heavy landing at Hood Aerodrome, near Masterton, in January.www.nzherald.co.nz/nz/news/article.cfm?c_id=1&objectid=10613213

Just read the headline when opening the 'Stuff' website here in Singapore this morning. had a gut feeling that it was the Spitfire. Sorry to hear about the incident and see the damage but very pleased that no-one was injured. Best wishes to Doug Brooker.
