Didn't you guys hear the latest. A new upgrade package starts in 2018 for the C130 where new engines, new tyres and microwave oven get fitted. This should take them through to 2030. on a serious note, yes the A400 I heard was a favourite choice at 40 Sqn but with the B757 having cargo mods which enable it to transport cargo pallets as carried by the C130 much faster to it's destination overseas, the C130's main original task of tactical transport will mean it does not need to any bigger than it is currently. Maybe they could go for 5 new J models with say 2 of them being stretched.
Yes I liked the look of the A400 but in reality is it just a tad too big for tactical transport for NZDF's needs.

Theres also this to consider: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Embraer_KC-390But yes the C-130J would seem more likely that the wrinkles have been ironed out and the A400M price has skyrocketed.

I posted the link to stimulate debate so I can learn more on this topic as I'm certainly no expert on this stuff. I agree that cost and uncertainty over the A400 are significant issues, however how does the A400 compare with the C130 regarding transportation of LAVIII? At the moment our Hercs can lift ONE LAV for a short distance. This means we need to rely on civilian rentals or friendly powers to offer a C17. I personally can’t see a New Zealand government paying for new c130’s and or C17’s to give us this much needed capacity. How do the c130 and A400 compare on range, speed and versatility?
