In the last two weeks the fuselage, hopper and centre wing sections of ZK-CBG have been moved to my parents' home in central Wanganui. Dad says he will re-fit the hopper (the boys from WAW removed it a few months back to help in scrapping it) and sort some temporary aluminium weatherproofing around it.
In the meantime my 3 year old nephew had a great time quizzing my mother about the new addition, saying that it can't be a real plane because "it doesn't have it's turny thing", and that "no, granny, it's a small plane". Kids these days. Dad mentioned putting a crate in the cockpit and a little ladder for access so he can get in and play, and yesterday Mum helped him in through the rear hatch to have a look around.

Why were WAW intending to scrap your plane? I thought you legally owned it now?

Yep. They wanted it out of the way so, rather than get in touch with the owner, it was decided to just hack into it. Fortunately one of their long-time employees stepped in and asked if they had permission.

Does anyone know where I can get Strontium or similar aluminium pre-paint anti-corrosion treatment?

G'day Zac, Did you ever get that Strontium Chromate primer ?
I may have a source and a heap of knowledge for you.

Haha thanks! Here's the full story from yesterday's Wanganui Midweek: 178252_338368312927512_1388135151_o by Zac Yates, on Flickr And no, I've not made any inquiries yet Baron so any help you could provide would be greatly appreciated!

On Heartland channel 17 there is a program called encounter about NZ aviation recorded probably in the mid 70s early 80s. There is a good shot of CBG landing in James colours as a 400. On again today at 430 pm

Four years since I posted in here? Damn! To be fair there's not been much to report.
Sam and I are looking to buy a home in Wanganui in the very near future, so I'm hopeful there will finally be some movement on this project at long last. Although Dad didn't seem to keen to see it go when I mentioned that part of the moving plan...

Around this time ten years ago I was on my lunchbreak and taking delivery of this aeroplane. She now resides in my parents’ central Whanganui driveway waiting for me to the the means to restore her to static display standard* for Whanganui - ideally painted in her original James Aviation colours on one side and a representative WAW scheme on the other. She’s safe from the scrapper but still outside, but she will be back. Unfortunately being currently unemployed I can’t finance the equipment and supplies needed to halt and treat the corrosion despite having loads of spare time! Hopefully in ten years’ time she will be intact and in a position to communicate the history of this very important aircraft type. Given today is the tenth anniversary of her being shifted out of the weeds I consider it the official “takeover” date and, after receiving a message enquiring about her current state and my plans, I figured it was a good idea to post this wee update *a generous benefactor or Lotto win would mean a full airworthy restoration, possibly with a 300hp engine.

I wonder how much the scrap value has risen in ten years, just out of interest. Might have actually been a good investment

Talking with Lou Larsen last week, they did not worry about such things at the Rukuhia scrap yard later on in the piece, they just fed the whole aeroplane (cut into three, two wings and the fuselage) into the furnace with everything still inside.

As Zac may recall I have many hours sitting in the jumpseat of CBG doing both ferry flights and ag ops as a passenger (ahh... the good 'ol days) I've loaded her a few times during my stint as a loader /driver too. So I'm hopeful the old girl will eventually take shape once again when things come right for Zac. Oh & I'll keep buying lotto tickets too mate

Without wanting to teach Granny to suck eggs, have you thought about spending some of your abundant free time hunting up free parts, tools, documents etc and on experimenting with corrosion control techniques etc. One thing we find invaluable is a well-tagged photo collection. Before we got this stuff sorted (and sometimes still) we spent a lot of time looking for *that* picture or document. I can offer some suggestions off-line if it would help. Cheers Alex
