I don't know if their has been a thread on Carvairs but in response to a request for pictures by alias I thought I would post some that I had. I am only posting one at the moment but have some colour shots yet to be scanned which I will do ASAP.

I remember the two Carvairs sitting at Hamilton when I was a kid. I fully believed for a while that they were Boeing 747's.

I can remember the two Carvairs flying from Singapore at the same time I was coming back to New Zealand in an Andover in 1978. Must have a look and see if I have any photos. We were flying at about 15,000 ft and over flew one of them way below us, probably at 9,000 ft.

They certainly had a variety of colour schemes. Here is NWA in Pacific Aerolift colours at Hamilton 29/8/83.If memory serves me right I think this was a company in Hawaii and they were to be used for delivering bread to the islands.

That would certainly add a few cents to each loaf.

I have a couple of pictures of Carvairs in my collection that were taken in Nelson when they were parked there.

When I was at 1 RD at Woodbourne in the mid 70's we used to see them coming in on a regular basis.

Guys, You must go to some of this stuff: There is a wealth of excellent reading and photos in Wikepedia: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Carvair Particularly in the External Links at the bottom of the page. You will see, for example the complete history of ZK-NWA, now a crashed wreck on an Alaskan mining airstrip. I worked on Carvairs extensively at JAL and did substantial electrical system modifications to upgrade the aircraft for the Hawaiian client. OJ

I remember visiting the Carvairs when I was younger. I did not like heights at that age and remember being quite upset about it... at the time.

This thread is the first time I have seen photos of one of these aircraft actually flying. Quite impressive in the air. I'll bet it sounded good on that low flypast.

A Carvair was seen in the James Bond movie "Goldfinger" on TV the other night - They were loading Auric Goldfinger's Rolls Royce (actually made of Gold for smuggling purposes) for a trip from the UK to Switzerland.

Realy interesting photos there Curtis, thanks for posting them. Would SAFE Air have had problems getting the fully laiden Carvair in and out of Woodbourne or was there sufficient room? I guess Nelson and Wellington and the Chathams must be long enough strips but I know Woodbourne's not too long.
