I have just spent a disappointing afternoon at hobby city in Auckland Central. I remember a time in Auckland when Hobby City, and Acorn Models, had huge selections of aircraft model kits. Then Acorn closed down. Hobby City had a decent range of kit sets, but go in there recently, and the aircraft OF ALL SCALES are on only 1 half a row in the entire shop... It is now full of remote control planes, and cars... Where in Auckland do people buy their Model plane kitsets from?

It' been a while between kits for me (like 10 years or so) but I saw Modelair was open today in Newmarket, and Stoker models still has the sign up on Market Road.

Papakura still has Steve's Models, and isn't there a model shop in Browns Bay (Kangs?)

Kangs (not sure if it still called that) is in Highbury aka Birkenhead shops. Although I have to admit, there wasn't to much aircraft there when I last looked in January. I went to Hobby City in Albany today, use to have two shelves full, one in 1/72 and one primairly 1/48 with a few 1/32, But today, there were still 2 shelves, they herdly had a lot of kits and nothing new since I last looked....very disappointing. I left without buying a new kit....My wife was so pleased.

Thats the same as the hobby city in the city too. There used to be one whole row devoted to 1:72, and one whole row devoted to 1:48. Now they are squashed together, and mixed together as well... Yet there must be well ovewr 100 r/c planes, as well as r/c cars and boats. I actually like r/c, but do we need as many r/c planes as kitset planes? really?

Thanks for the names of all the other model shops, guys. I will go out this weekend, and have a look through them.

Kangs (not sure if it still called that) is in Highbury aka Birkenhead shops. www.acehobby.co.nz/Not sure what's in there any more as it's been many years since I had a look despite it being just up the road and going past it every time we go food shopping - lost the modelling bug in my teens although this forum (and James May) has stirred a few embers Cheers, Stu.

ModelAir in Kent St is your best bet for aircraft. Kangs is hardly worth visiting unless you want Trumpeter or Academy. Acorn closed down their Auckland branch. Hobby City (both branches) are getting a reputation as RC havens.
In terms of Hasegawa kits, we have sold less than a dozen kits to both Hobby City branches combined since we started operations in September last year, but we have a regular turnover with ModelAir. Would be nice to report Hobby City was buying, but they seem to do it to order only.
Hobby City changed ownership about the time Acorn left, and has dwindled to a shell of what it was for scale models.

There used to be a good model shop in Te Atatu where the shopkeeper kept a good stock of RNZAF releated models in particular. Probbaly long gone though I guess?

Unfortunately he has long gone. There was also a fairly good model shop in Ranui, and that has gone too. There was one in Ponsonby, which was mainly R/c, but had a growing number of plastic models, and that closed down too. There just doesn't seem to be the same market for plastic models as there used to... :-(

Does Airsail have much in the way of plastic kits these days?

When I last spoke to the owner of Airsail. He was shutting up shop in Penrose and was going to operate out of a garage in North Shore. He was going to be on the internet and do sales that way.I bought some kitsets when he had some going cheap last year.
