Hi all The following link might be of interest as the RNZAF will be operating similar aircraft fairly soon. It is interesting to read the comments on the original post. Most of the comments are from highly qualified, hi time chopper pilots... www.flyafrica.info/forums/showthread.php?t=25636Marcus

Yep, the old payload/range trade-off strikes again!
When I first saw the A109s that the RAN are leasing I was quite taken aback by how small they really are.
I don't reckon you'd get a 20mm cannon in one of those wee beasties, Marcus! ;D ;D

Interesting comments, however as far as the NZ helos are concerned it is worth remembering our birds will be different to the SA machines. Some of the South African problems stem from local license production. Not saying anything is wrong with that, however locally produced machines will always be suseptible to gremlins as the production lines bed in. They have a number of extra "goodies" added which obviously increases empty weight, and they are operated in hot and high conditions regularly. Ours will probably spend a fair bit of time around Ohakea - which certainly isnt high, and generally isnt that hot!. The South African machines appear to be used differently too - lots of carting Grunts around in the field, which ours may do sometimes, but probably only rarely - that what NH90s are for.
