Had the opportunity to take some magazine photos covering this event at the weekend. Never shot high speed boats before and a few challenges and exposure issues to sort out but pretty happy with the results. The big bangers reached speeds of 200 kmh plus and the sound was amazing.

Gavin, for many years my late father was involved in the NZ power boat scene, first as crew with the Cambridge based boat Misty Blue, and later he was crew on the champion Grand Prix boat The Boss (also known as Boss Mobil One). So I got to see a fair few photos over the years of these boats that Dad took or others would give him etc (as he also ran a model power boat business, GRH Hobbies).
All I can say is for a first attempt you've done spectacularly well. These are among the best photos I've seen. Dad would have loved seeing these, I'm certain of it.
Was the Boss at this meet? It was back at Karapiro some weeks back apparently after a few years in retirement. It now wears a red scheme, quite a difference from its old shiny black look. Dad built an exact scale model of the Boss as a gift for his mate Peter Knight who owned and raced the boat. It's about 4 foot long and is really awesome. Peter has it in a glass case in his hotel, Latimer Lodge, I believe.

That Phantom boat in the second set of photos looks like something from the 1930's comics, really cool. I like the shark mouth boat too.
Was that white one stalling?

And this weekend at Lake Rotoiti is the annual Classic Boats meeting, lots of lovely old boats with a handful of beautiful steam launches and acres of highly polished varnished woodwork.
I made it up there two years ago but won't be going this years as the motorhome isn't quite ready after it's return from Mandeville
