So sad that just as the Sunderland is about to go indoors on proper display for the first time ever, we have lost one of its long time carers, former WWII Sunderland pilot Mac Bettjeman, who has passed away. BETTJEMAN, Macnab (Mac). (NZ 429134 Flying Officer RNZAF) On 7 September 2017, aged 95 years. Dearest Husband of Noelene for 66 years and loving father to Wayne, Greg, Grant, Craig, and the late Russell. Special father-in-law and friend of Alison, Jenny, Phif and Kate. Dear Grandad of Bodhi, Rowan, Dion, Petra, Bianca, Brittany and Finn and Great Grandad to Maia and Giulia. ?'Will be dearly missed by us all?'. A special thanks to the rest home staff at Bob Owens Retirement Village for their exceptional care and respect for Mac, especially over the last several months. A celebration of Mac?'s life will be held at Tauranga Park, 383 Pyes Pa Rd, Tauranga.on Tuesday 12 September at 2pm, followed by burial. Communication to the Bettjeman Family, c/o P O Box 3136 Greerton, Tauranga 3142. Mac was a guest on my show in 2015, a terrific bloke, I am so glad I had the privilege to know him. www.cambridgeairforce.org.nz/WONZShow/2016/02/episode-99-mac-bettjeman-sunderland-pilot/

Wow what a magnificent sight, obviously the RNZAF Sunderlands had the perspex of the turret replaced with alloy plates, were they like this for all there service life or did they have clear panels as well?

Ron Hermanns (my uncle)is still alive. Born 1911. He worked on the Sunderlands after war service and before moving to NAC in 1947. I will be visiting him again for his birthday later this month Sept 2017. He has recorded an oral history recently. He has a very good memory of his life events.

She had clear panels when she was delivered to Motat Perhaps when it is inside, the clear panels may be reinstalled instead of the anti-vagrant solid panels.

I visited Ron a few years back when he was only 99, and interviewed him. He had a great memory and told some good stories. I believe he is now New Zealand's oldest man, aged 103. Good to hear he has another birthday coming up.

Wow, that is amazing footage. Its hard to imagine now how one Sunderland in the air may and sounded and felt, left alone two flying together in formation. Thanks.

There were actually five in formation in one of those shots, imagine that, 20 big radials.

The team has been working really hard on this project - we aim to ensure that what we have achieved of having all the planes under cover (first time in 50 years) and cared for, is the number 1 target.

Congratulations! She looks just like she did when my late Dad was one of her aircrew in Fiji.
