Thanks for that Shorty. Considering that the paint has worn right back to the American colour scheme my guess is that the Coastal Patrol was a USAAF marking, and it would have been painted over when it got here to NZ.
Great photo, it shows where the marking comes from but does not prove it was worn on the RNZAF RB-34's as such.

Hi, I'm Steven Hatton. Director of the Bomber Command documentary referred to earlier. If you've not heard of it you can find the trailer on www.intothewind.co.ukIt has been mentioned in the film that a film we made for MOTAT is on display. We were extremely pleased to be asked to make this special short film using material from Into the Wind and also material that was unused in the feature length film. I would love to hear feedback about the film from anyone who has watched it and if anyone has any images of the film in situ I would love to see them. Unfortunately, a flight across to MOTAT isn't possible at the moment so it would be great to see our work in situ. Very best wishes Steve

I'm thinking about pre-ordering the DVD. I've watched short segments of the film during visits, looks good. I'm planning on dropping in on the weekend to see what they have done with the Skyhawk, I'll take some context photos for you (and for Dave, of the FAA section).

Errol, can you please photograph the touchscreen displays that we made too? I still have not seen the finished result yet either. There's a Fleet Air Arm one and a Bomber Command one, each playing films with veterans.

Are you going to be at Cambridge Armistice on the Saturday, I could give you a copy. I make a point of watching at least one vet's clips each visit.

I might be there on the Saturday or I maybe zipping across to check out Black Sands at Raglan that day, and go to Armistice on the Sunday - not certain yet.

Thank you ErrolC, that would be greatly appreciated - I'd love to see what it looks like insitu. Thanks also for your interest in the film, the DVD features the MOTAT film as an extra. It was great to use some of the material that got left on the cutting room floor simply for reasons of time.

I might well have had an account in the past but not sure if Ive used it much. Ill try and pop in here whenever I can. If anyone has any questions about the film/filmmaking process etc I'd be happy to answer any questions. The new display hall really looks quite superb. Did you produce the touch screens and content?

I have been involved in the touchscreens by way of filming many of the interviews with the veterans, doing the research (both general research and the research to track down veterans), scanning photo collections, writing copy for the written part of the display, etc. sadly it's all done on a very low budget, no-one in this country has the desire to fund the recording of our WWII veterans. So we have been minimalist - ie an interview would usually see me as camera, sound and lighting guy, researcher and interviewer, and sometimes editor later. ie a one man band. We are doing the best we can on next to no funding, we have managed to film around 300 veterans in the past two years and got some amazing Air Force, Navy, Army, Fleet Air Arm and other stories recorded. And the standard is pretty good considering, but it would have been much happier with a budget that actually suits such a project. MOTAT has been the only organisation that has dipped into its pockets so far, apart form the project manager himself and his company. But realistically what MOTAT now has is just the tip of the iceberg of the recordings we have in our archives. We have Battle of Britain pilots, aces, Bomber Command crews, Pacific bomber crews, Pacific and Europe and Middle East fighter pilots, Army Co-op pilots, transport pilots, special ops aircrew; soldiers who served in Greece, Crete, Libya, Tunisia, Egypt, Italy and the Pacific; sailors who were in the Atlantic, Pacific, Med, Arctic, etc; Fleet Air Arm fighter pilots, bomber pilots and crews who served in the Atlantic, Pacific, Indian Ocean, Med, Arctic, Tasman, etc; We have home service personnel and women who served.
So we have a massive collection and we're just hoping a museum will come along and say "We want that display, and this display" now.

Dave , the touch screen is a credit to all , in our review of the BCA display as it is we have asked for a repeater screen so that visitors other than the screen operator can share the content. We have a few issues about other aspects of the display including the screening area showing Steves movie which needs a better sound system.

Thanks Peter. I'm really glad to hear you guys are happy with it, that is the main thing. I am looking forward to getting up there one day and seeing the installations for myself. The touchscreen technology and the way it came together was all Richard Carstens' work, he has put a lot of work into it.

Slight glitch, the installation was not operating (as of this morning), and AV support is not on-call during the weekend. The staff responded appropriately (apologised, confirmed I had an annual pass, and that I knew about the other AV interviews available). The sound level issue will be addressed shortly, it has to be balanced with the period music in the main part of the hangar. Photos at www.flickr.com/photos/errolgc/sets/72157628056392388/

Official OPening of Aviation Hall Four hundred guests with the Minister of Defence, Auckland Mayor and Councillors met on Monday night to officially dedicate the new hall. The coloured lighting and RNZAF Auckland band certainly brought the hangar to life. MOD Wayne Mapp confirmed that examples of the Aermacchi, Strikemaster Sioux and Iroguois would soon follow the Skyhawk on permanent loan. He commented that other than Eretria The RNZAF Aermacchi's fit of engine and electronics is unique and bringing the fleet back into operation was cost prohibitive.
