Great to see these shots coming through.
What is the current situation with the RB-34 Ventura? I haven't seen any shots of it in the new or old hangar. Is it in the workshops?

I hope the Ventura doesnt get painted in the same awful gloss paint as the Hudson. Modern satin and matt paints are very durable, so I just cant understand why the Hudson is in a gloss camouflage???

The Solent seems to have been paint stripped too.

Thanks for the photo of the Ventura. I agree Mike that the gloss paint on the Hudson is a bit overkill, but at least it has new paint and has been tidied up considerably and all the damage it sustained sitting outside has been repaired.
Soon the only aircraft looking rough as guts will be the Skyhawk. A great achievement.

Something else I am curious about, where is the Swordfish replica now and all the Fleet Air Arm Museum of New Zealand displays? Are they still in the same corner?

Same corner, but less crowded than it was. Next time I'm in (probably next weekend) I'll take some shots to give you perspective. Swordfish is next to the ship model cases, facing into the hangar.

Here you go Dave. These were taken last Saturday. Further to Errol's comment about the Avenger it has to go into the new hangar before the Flying boats so there may be some work still to do on it. Ron and the team are doing a good job in getting it ready. What goes into the hangar after that I don't know but they do have the Auster and Magister in there from the old display hangar. Presumably for some TLC tidy up work.

I was wondering where the Magister was. I hope it gets more prominence this time round, it used to be shoved up in a corner where you seldom thought to look, and many would have missed it. Many also would have no idea of its significance as a 1930's and wartime trainer, and as a communications aircraft in the RNZAF.
It's good to see the Sqordfish is now uncluttered but I notice the excellent aircrew figures who used to be seen boarding it are now gone.
The Avenger is suipposed to be painted itno FAA colours, I hope they get it completed. It's bad enough that the P-40 is still unfinished and on display.

Good pictures, I will catch up with the Skyhawk on Wednesday. Don for book sales contact Debbie Brown at MOTAT. As far as I know the Ventura is the next up for a thorough redo. Norm Mc Elvy says the years outside have caused a few problems. The Solent and Sunderland are up for a post Xmas repaint. Auckland weather has almost removed all the yellow varnish from the Solent so its an acrylic repaint ,as before. Any comments about displays let the Exhibition Manager know. The official opening is next Monday 7/11 at 5.45, invitation only.

I'm glad to hear the Ventura will get a complete make over. I hope they select an accurate colour scheme for it this time around, because in all my research I have never come across evidence of any Ventura having COASTAL PATROL written above the door (and I cannot think of any reason the RNZAF would do that). NZ4600 did not fly coastal patrols in RNZAF service at all, it went straight to the Technical Training School at Nelson to train up the Servicing Unit technicians with. If those words were actually worn on the aircraft it had to be a hangover from its USAAF service but I'd like to see the evidence.
And the artwork on it of the strangles Jap is adapted from an RNZAF Lodestar, I do not believe it was also worn by a Ventura. I dare say these days it's too un-PC to put back on there anyway.
I'd personally like to see it wear the colours of one of the B-34's that served with No. 4 (GR) Squadron in Fiji operationally (for a short time before they realised they were clapped out and they were all sent home to become operational trainers). Photos of these are hard to find though, and I have only interviewed one chap who flew in those aircraft then, and he has since died. I assume they were painted and marked up like the squadrons Hudsons, not certain though.

All the way back then you probably had to dodge dinosaurs and everything to get photos like this?

Hi all, I headed over to Motat this afternoon and was lucky enough to time it just as they were finishing the assembly and getting 06 back on her own wheels again. Looking very good, apart from paint damage caused by the shrink wrap the aircraft looked excellent. I heard one the team saying "Thats four done"!! Yip and here is number five, this is the jet destined for Wanaka. The paint job on 06 looked to be in really good condition.
