I guess this is the first hangar to be built for the RNZAF since the war, isn't it? The only exception being the current No. 6 Squadron hangar which was built postwar for NAC.

We have lots of aerial shots at work, but since none were released to the press I'm not sure I can post them.

That is quite a structure. I'm sure I read the museum buildings had to move out of the way so this hangar would be placed on the spot but it seems they changed that plan? Or are they still going to move the old buildings?
It looks like there are not designed to fit larger fixed wing types if the need arose. or are those partitions removable?

Dave, they are purely for rotary wing aircraft, noting that these are the most "warlike" of the RNZAF's inventory for the current and future.

I thought the area where the car park park is was going to be an even bigger building for all the MSS workshops but I must have got that wrong and they are building that elsewhere.

Beagle you are correct, the area behind the hangar in the 3rd and 4th photos is where MSS is going, what you see there is the car parking and access road. From that angle it doesn't look so big, but it is larger than the area taken up by the 3 SQN hangar.

With all this expenditure and development the Government will probably soon decide to sell Ohakea as a commercial airport venture.

So would I be also right in saying that the new main gate will be , as in image 2, 2/3rds across and 1/3 rd up, in that area, if you get my drift

wow massive progess since the last shots!! but what about the old hangars on the other side of the airfield?? the air training wing can't need all that space what are we going to fill them with?? and am i right to say that the building in the middle of the 2 hangars will house the simulators and the mission buildings?

The building in the middle, isn't for the sim, it's the admin/crew room/ role store/ class rooms. From memory, the Sim will be in another building.
As for the other hangars...
1, 2, and 3 hangar will stay, 4 hangar will be replaced by air moves.

Phil, when you say '4 hangar will be replaced by air moves' does that mean Air Movements are moving into No. 4 Hangar, or is the actual buiulding being physically demolished and a new Air Movements complex going up? No. 4 Hangar is a tin hangar isn't it? there was talk of pulling down the concrete hangars at one stage as they were supposedly worn out.

4 hangar will be demolished/dismantled.
2 and 3 hangar are staying, too hard to knock down.

There was talk of 4 hangar being dismantled, moved and reassembled for the proposed Ohakea Visitor Centre. Not sure if that is still the plan or not? At the moment 4 hangar is full of Macchis and all their servcing equipment.
Phil - what is the plan for 5 hangar (the current paint shop)?
