Does anyone happen to have a list of airmen who were on the intake course at Harewood which began around the 8th of November 1940?
This was an initial intake course but the airmen were all engineers and it seems most if not all went on to Rongotai after that - beginning their trade course on the 12th of December 1940.
I know that three chaps from this course were Jim Ross (of Cambridge and Norm Todd and C. Manley Walsh who both later moved to Cambridge.
I believe there was also a chap called Peach, perhaps another cambridge man called V. Pitman, and a Len Perry.
I'd like to get the full course list if possible. After the Rongotai course many of these guys went to Harewood to help form No. 3 (GR) Squadron, including Jim Ross, Norm Todd and Peach.
Any help would be much appreciated. Thanks.

Interestingly, from that list Jim Ross, Victor Pitman and Arthur "Digger" Morriss were all from Cambridge, and Norm Todd and Manley Walsh both moved here after the war. I wonder if there are any other Cambridge connections.
Jim and Norm served on No. 3 GR Squadron as Flight Mechancs before both becoming Flight Engineers on 5 FB Sqn Catalinas. Digger served on No. 1 GR Squadron and then No. 40 Squadron and the Pacific Ferry Command. Manley from memory went to Wigram and then up to the islands servicing Corsairs. I don't know what Victor did at all. Thanks to this list I have finally discovered his first name after searching for the last four years or so.

Interestingly, in the Cambridge Independent newspaper's "YEARS AGO TWENTY FIVE" history column from sometime in November 1965, it stated that J.D. Ross, V. Pitman and R.A. Pearce all reported to Harewood to begin training as Flight Mechanics.
It was this article that first alerted me to the fact that someone called Pitman from Cambridge had served in the RNZAF.
The R.A. Pearse was Robert Arthur Pearce NZ404795. It seems however that Bob Pearce was not on this course and from his service number indeed joined later. I wonder where the paper got his name from, was he perhaps called up and then delayed in joining. Not a biggie, it's just a curious thing.

Something to look for regarding names (and not just Service records) is the name Todd. If someone asks me my name they write down Barry Todd. But my last name is actually Tod. This has caused a few problems historically but for me when I see a Todd I wonder if he was actually a Tod! ;D

In the case of Norm, I know him personally and he is definately Todd. He and Jim Ross founded a famous company in Cmabridge called Ross Todd Motors which went from 1946 till last year when it was bought out. He's also the father of another famous Cambridge person, Mark Todd.

Here is another course photo with a question attached. It is a course my father was on and all the names are on the back, however silverfish have eaten off the name of the guy at the top left and, more importantly, they have also eate the area where my father had written the course name. The photo was taken outside the Ration Store at Harewood on 27-3-41. They all appear to be AC2s except for the chap with big ears in the middle of the bottom row who is an LAC with medal ribbons. Does anyone know what course it was?

Shorty, was your father a Flight Mechanic or a Fitter Armourer?
Would you mind posting a scan of the other side so we can see the names please?

Dave, he became a rigger eventually so I presume that initially they were called Flight Mechanics? Later I'll see if I can find any photos of his Rongotai courses but it's all packed away at present

Thanks Nev. So it looks like we have:
Back Row 1: ?? 2: I. Morris 3: K.G. Mackey 4: Willis 5: H.A. McIlroy 6: C.A. McCarthy 7: Bigglelow 8: Johnson A. 9: M.A. McNaughton 10: Frank Ridgeway
Centre Row 1: A.H. Mines 2: M.J. Walters 3: J.L. McNaughton 4: E.J.S. Spencer 5: J.R. Stewart 6: H. Crawford 8: Pennington 7: Lonsdale 9: Small 10: D.B. Stevens
Front Row 1: C.S. Tarr 2: F.J. McQuillard 3: E.F. Murray 4: ?? 5: J. Strickland MMC 6: Jetstaff 7: J.G. Wallace 8: G. Kemp 9: F.G. Watson
I'm not sure if I have them all strictly right but it gives some idea of the course. None of those names jump out at me at all I'm afraid so I doubt I have anything more to add. Over to Errol, I think.

Having looked at the original signatures there are a couple of minor adjustments Back row, 3 Mackey is probably H.G., 7, Bigglelow may be Sigglehow or Sigglekow
Middle Row 10, Stevens may be Stevenson
Front Row $ seems to have a O and X in it (Oxef**ing?), 5 Abbreviation after Strickland is LAC, 6 looks moe like Jetzlaff
Always difficult with the ones that are signatures, the ones without initials seem to have been written by Dad.

An interesting fellow is Ivan Tetzlaff.
According to Errol's list he joined up on 7/3/41 and not quite 3 weeks later he appears in a course photo with rank on his sleeve and what appears to be medal ribbons on his tunic.
The name rings a faint bell with me, but I cannot think of the connection..

Thanks Errol, but I now see to my embarrassment that I can't count.. Ivan Tetzlaff is number 6 in the front row and not no.5 as I thought. No.5 will be the nco in charge (I guess ) of the Course, LAC Strickland.
