Thanks guys. I'm in Redwood which is in the Northern part of ChCh and we have just got power back on after nearly 6 hours with out it. I was at work when it hit and was making a cup of coffee. I literally had to hang on to the cafe door frame to keep upright it was that strong! I could hear some massive crashes and bangs from the workshop so was surprised to see little damage apart from a few heaters toppled and some coolant splashed on the floor from some of the CNC milling machines. However the tool room was a BIG mess. We have these large steel cabinets with drawers full of our tooling and tips etc. The drawers had been flung out across the room! Several had landed on a large tool trolley and demolished it. I feel that if anyone had been in the way they would have been seriously injured. we still have water which is good although they are saying not to flush the loo. No deaths so far but one poor chap got hit by a falling chimney and is in intensive care. Hmmmmm makes me glad Harvard NZ1050 is off the pole!! Hope the "hung" exhibits in the Museum are ok. This is Survivor Baz signing off!

This is devastating news for Canterbury, I have been looking at the TV coverage on TV One, man there's a lot of damage by the look of it. A lot ofthe places I recognise too. So sad to see so many buildings crashed down, especially the older buildings. And I'm amazed to see the flooded streets too where the river seems to have spilled over.
I hope all of you down that way are ok, Baz and co, Beags, Al, Chewy, Barf, Errol, Sean (parrotfish), Mike (asterix), etc. I have had a text from Don Simms and he and his wife are ok, but shaken of course.
On an aviation note, it is good to hear that Christchurch airport seems to be structurally ok, although it remains closed. It's a good thing the Wigram Harvard was off it's pole at the moment. I hope that the museums such as Wigram and Ferrymead have not suffered bad damage.

So far all my family and friends who are living in Christchurch seem to be okay - just a bit shocked sounding, as is to be expected after what they've been through.
Baz, bloody lucky you decided to have a coffee when you did.
Sounds to me that areas around New Brighton and the central city area have been the worst affected?

Apart from one two broken cups and glasses, just heaps of paper, folders and Eastlight files all over the floor. Probably take most of the day to sort through and put it all back into place. At least it’s not the sort of stuff that breaks or leaks. I’ve been much luckier than some elsewhere in town. Errol

A day of drama and Mother Nature's reminder to us all. Storms last night and earthquakes and aftershocks today.
TVNZ has had the News on all day covering the Canterbury quake and aftershocks and will do until 6 then a 90 minute special follows apparently. I know it's the biggest quake to hit a major populated NZ centre since the 1931 Napier quake, but does anyone else feel the media is over doing the coverage?
Glad to hear all our Cantabrian forumites are well and safe. I managed to sleep through the quake as it passed through Wellington ;D

I guess they are keeping the coverage up for those in Canterbury who are just getting their power back on. And at least it's better than the cooking shows they normally show on TV1.
Nice Flysander avatar by the way.

Although I'm from Auckland, all my immediate family now live in Christchurch. Thankfully they are all OK, but a bit shaken up as is to be expected. My sister says that the damage is staggering, they have no power but luckily their house is not badly damaged. Just about to call my Dad who is in a retirement village in the city. I know he's OK though as my sis has already spoken to him.
All my thoughts go out to those in and around Christchurch.
Take care and kia kaha.

That was a "I'll never forget that" moment.... quite honestly the worst and scariest thing I've ever experienced. To be woken from a deep sleep rock'n'rollin side to side, in the dark, a just as scared wife clawing at me as I dive out of bed, dragging her along to the door frame, and then trying to move just 5 steps to my sons room without getting shook to the floor and then finally getting him out of bed and the 3 of us standing under a frame for what seemed like an eternity.
I spent 7hrs listening to the radio on my cellphone, trying to get as much info as we could, so no overdoing the coverage from my end, glad for it.
Some of the aftershocks were quite dramatic. Short sudden and violent can best describe them. Still getting them reasonably reguarly after 13hrs....
Have a much more profound respect for Mother earth and will, when the CBD is opened, be going down to Payless Plastics for a monster bin to fill with all that shit that they've been blahhing on about for years. Walking around a dark, silent, erry, house and property at 4.40am is not the time to be thinking "I wish I'd got that emergency kit together".
Best sunrise ever! by the way, something very comforting about daylight in a natural disaster/emergency.
If it's one thing I WILL tell you fellow forumites.... Get an emergency kit together! I am.

Good advice there S2K. We have the camper as an emergency backup - gas stove and suchlike.
Good to hear that the personal damage casualty list is (so far) quite light.

Cheers team,
From the Herald website updates:
17.05pm Power has been restored to 77 per cent of Christchurch city and is still expected to be restored to 90 per cent or more by tonight.
Rural areas in central Canterbury are largely out of power as a result of downed poles or lines.
Wigram airport is not currently operating.
Good up to date factual reporting there.

Did a house suddenly move sideways during the quake and end up on the runway???
