It looks like more bad publicity for the NZ Defence Force coming up on 60 Minutes tonight where they are to expose the most senior technical advisor to the NZDF as a CV liar who has a terrible business background.

Complete balls up by someone in a recruiting agency or within Defence itself to employ this guy without checking his credentials. there have been several CV cheats expose within the NZ Public Service eg. Immigration in recent years surely for people to do some checking up on their senior appointments. But nope.

Just watched it... not a good look. The Defence Scientific Establishment does fantastic work. How an idiot like that got put in charge of them is unbeliveable!

I would have thought that the security vetting process of the NZSIS would have picked it up. A CV cheat of all things. But, no and am I suprised - well no. Indicicative of the casual approach to security-defence in general and the lax way we do things here. We recently had a ministerial/political advisor within the defence portfolio go for months without the hard word being put to him. If there was a question against someones past and activities in any of the other modern democracies action would have been swift and without apology.

I missed all but the very end of it as I was on the phone. So I'm not exactly up with the play here. Has he been blamed for any of the Defence cock-ups lately such as the ships that keep breaking down or the Hercules and Orion re-fit balls ups? Or are they other bungling civil servants' responsibilites?

But, if he was at the top, he doesn't actually have to be competent at his job. That's what all the real workers are there for - to make the figureheads look like they have an idea what's going on!

take it they had quite a bit to do with Kahu No not Kahu but they have made a significant contribution to the design and developed of some cutting edge technology for the NZDF over the years (can't go into details as a lot of it is secret squirrel stuff!). I am VERY surprised this guy got a Top Secret SIS clearance. Having been through the positive vetting process myself and been a referee for others gaining clearance I can't understand how the alarm bells about this guy weren't going off right from the start. There needs to be a full inquiry not only into his CV and offer of employment but also the security clearance.

I notice that Key and several other defence figures are being very coy about whether he had access to high level security documents! I'm sorry, but heads should roll over this affair.

A problem there is Craig he's been in the position for five years. Most of those who's heads should roll have probably already moved on.
One way to look at it is the government spent quarter of a million of NZDF budget sending him to a high level specialist eight-month course in Britain to train him for the position and he obviously passed the course, so perhaps he wasn't unqualified for the role he was in. That takes noting away for the fact he cheated to get there though, and that we'll no doubt have to spend the same amount again to train his replacement.

Did you see on the news last night after the New Zealand Defence Force was forced to apologise to several overseas countries who had been subjected to Wilce working with them on defence projects, Jerry Mataparae held a press conference. In that he was asked, "Is this the worst ting you have ever seen in New Zealand Defence?" about the Wilce case, and he replied, "I have to say... no."
At least he's honest but that has to be worrying.
