This Devon ex Woodbourne ( INST 216) was delivered to mOTAT on Wednesday (8/9/10). It is on loan from the RNZAF and will remain in MOTATs Avondale store before going on display in the new superhangar at Meola Rd. It is in perfect complete condition, may it stay that way.

Good news. It's an important type in our postwar history and will make a nice addition to the collection alongside other early postwar RNZAF types like the Auster and the Hastings bits.
Are there any other aeroplanes in the Avondale store? I didn't know MOTAT had a facility there.

Its locked up tighter than the proverbial and I havent seen an inventory, but thats next weeks job. I am told that there are uniforms , the odd engine and assorted " parts". Considering that the Meloa Rd sites back sheds contain an ex ANZ 747 simulator, an engine from the DC8 that crashed at Whenuapai, Bristol Hercules engines and Lancaster spares, anything is possible. Perhaps thats where the Meteor is !

Great to hear, thanks for the news. The Devon is a wonderful addition to the collection and will be well looked after in the new mega hangar. Good to have the RNZAF looking after it's retired aircraft so well now, rather than scrapping them as was the case when Motat was founded in the 60's.
I haven't visited the Avondale store but I think it is mostly full of cars? 99.99% certain there are no (other) aircraft parts of any sort there. I was around Motat in the 90's when we cleared all the off site aviation spares in store back to the Meola Road hangars and buildings.

Here it is in 1978. I think it was with 42 Sqdn at the time.

Nice shot Keith. The Devons wore such a variety of colour schemes over the years. That is an interesting one. Note how the serial number is black on blue, not easy to spot.

Thanks Dave. I think the Devons probably wore more schemes than any other RNZAF type. Enough to keep even a keen modeller going for some time. When I get to scanning all my Devon slides I will start counting. Does anyone know how many schemes?

When I get to scanning all my Devon slides I will start counting. Does anyone know how many schemes? There would have been other types with equal or greater number of distinct types of colour scheme - Harvards and Oxfords come to mind.... Devons do have some very cool schemes though!

OK. So far I have counted eight Devon schemes and I haven't even dug out my own photos yet. Can't post any more coz they're not mine! It would be fun to see what type actually had the most schemes.
Harvard most likely after Devon ;D

Mind you that's pretty impressive. Four different CT-4 schemes in one photo.

Did anyone get any photos of it being delivered to Motat?

The Harvards had numerous ad hoc schemes at the end of the war. I've seen a photo of one just after the war with one camouflaged wing and one bare metal wing!
