Peter, would you guys down there at Ashburton have a spare tailwheel assembly, or any cockpit parts for the restoration? Dave, I've spoken with Keith Pickford, one of the Southern DC3 Trust Trustees. He thinks there is some tailwheel stuff among the spares, but may be airworthy/required. However, worth talking with him directly. I will PM you his contact details. Its a great inititative and I'm chuffed that Ossie James daughter is so passionate to preserve the DC3 properly. It's a small (DC3) community and we all need to help each other.

Thanks for that Pete, I'll let Lynnette and the team know about Mr Pickford and she can contact him. She's very passionate indeed about it, she said the aircraft used to break her father's heart every year when he attended the Fieldays as it was so sad and abused, and she's so happy that there are people willing to save it. There's a whole team of people behind this, and it's all positive stuff, both for the Waikato and for the aviation preservation community.

I have just received this photo from Paul McSweeny, who isn't sure where he originally got it but he believes this is during the initial trials of AZL as a topdreser, and note the Rukuhia graveyard below.

Great wee story. I submitted a comment saying as much, and commenting on the incorrect spelling of Lynnette's name.
I am a month into "Journalism school". In the first couple of days we were taught: "Always ask the spelling of your subject's name, even if you're confident you've done it correctly."

Are there plans for a more thorough restoration in the future Dave? Last nut and bolt type of job.

It is currently having the skins replaced and any corrosion removed, etc while at Hamilton Airport. And then the interior will be refitted with a new cockpit, etc. It will never be up to airworthy standards, but why would it be? It's going into a permanent building once the spruce up is done.

Also I should've specified I was thinking full static restoration rather than airworthy, a topdressing-modified heritage Dak would be a big moneypit! I'm glad to hear the work will be more in-depth than a "Dulux overhaul".
