SQNLDR (Rtd) David Lampen-Smith, GD (Pilot) - formerly 42 Sqn & 5 Sqn. Passed away yesterday, Wednesday 18th September at home with his family after several months battling cancer. Dave (aka Poon, 2 dads and others) was a former ATC Cadet and later an officer with 10 Sqn in Palmerston North. We first met on our Under Officers course in Hobsonville in 1986. Always the life and soul of the party Dave was renowned for his wicked sense of humour and pranks.
He did a few overseas deployments with 42 Sqn to the Sinai and others and fulfilled his ambition of becoming a P-3 captain where he was involved with a number of successful SAR missions. After leaving the mob he joined Jet Connect working the trans-Tasman route and worked his way up to the role of Chief pilot and prior to his illness he was manager of flight crew training.
A loyal friend and a true gentleman taken too soon, RIP mate - you'll never be forgotten.
