This just came through from the Tiger Moth Club of New Zealand
Eddie Doherty: An appreciation
The Tiger Moth Club lost a valued member and friend with the death of Eddie Doherty on 22 November, aged 86.
When I became secretary/treasurer 40 years ago, the Tiger Moth Club was undergoing something of a rejuvenation. Formed as the Tiger Club at Taumarunui in October 1969, it was one of the trio of organisations, along with the Golden Age Flying Society and the Amateur Aircraft Constructors Association, that went to make up the Sport & Vintage Aviation Society in the 1970s. The idea was to have a Masterton headquarters of engineering and other expertise to look after our sorts of aeroplanes; after all, everybody went to one another’s fly-ins and cooperation meant a closely-knit GA community. But the idea was probably ahead of its time. The AACA, worried about losing its autonomy, pulled out and went its own way, later to be reorganised into the Sport Aircraft Association (SAANZ). While the SVAS successfully carried on to be recently renamed the Wairarapa Flying Tigers, the Tiger Club seemed to be submerged and become moribund – deliberately, according to some reports.
The 50th anniversary of the Tiger Moth’s 1931 first flight saw a large gathering of the type at Bridge Pa and a determination to bring the club out of whatever shoebox it had been tucked away in, and the renamed Tiger Moth Club was back in action.
I’m most pleased to say it has gone from strength to strength, but as a new secretary in 1983 I soon encountered a bureaucratic problem. The previous lack of annual filing of accounts and other evidence of activity meant that the club was about to be deregistered, so something had to be done – and quickly.
What was needed first was a Constitution, a set of rules. This was where the measured and legal mind of Eddie Doherty was most welcome. Eddie had two main pieces of advice: keep it simple; and keep the quorum numbers low. An appropriate set of rules was filched from somewhere – distance dims the memory here – and adapted to suit our modest needs. It was quickly accepted by whatever government department handled such things at the time, and the strength of Eddie’s advice and the simplicity of our rules meant that nothing had to be altered over the decades they were in force. Only now, when the rules governing incorporated societies have been rewritten, do we need to bring ours up to modern specifications.
NZ Warbirds president Frank Parker told his members that Eddie “was one of the foundation members of the Association. He was closely involved in the early governance and formation of several aircraft syndicates including the Beaver, DC-3 and STM Ryan. As a legal person, he was the unofficial Association ‘go to’ person and assisted on numerous occasions to untangle a tangled web.”
Eddie’s expertise in forming aircraft syndicates probably came from his involvement in the racing industry. He was president of the Avondale Jockey Club for some time, and he was noted for arranging charters of the Warbirds DC-3 to distant rural race meetings. As a pilot, he flew his own Cessna 310 as well as being a member of the Beaver syndicate and sharing Tiger Moth ZK-ALM with his son Paul, Lindsay King, Tom Newland and doubtless others.
Health issues prevented Eddie from participating in Tiger Moth Club activities over the past few years, but my main impression of him is of a jovial character, never pushing his own opinion but always willing, in carefully measured terms, to answer questions. He will be missed, and our condolences go to his family.
Eddie Doherty’s funeral will be on Tuesday 28 November at 11 am. A Requiem Mass will be held in Our Lady of the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, 66 Main Highway, Ellerslie, Auckland. John King
