Hugh Findlater
Flew Mitchells in WWII followed by a long career with NAC. Had to retire at 55 in those days but could fly to 60 elsewhere. Had the pleasure, after hearing many stories about him, to meet and fly with him in West Africa before he had to ‘retire’. Great guy and representative of that generation.

AIR COMMODORE (RTD) GRAEME BERNARD GILMORE OBE, S78653, ENGR, RNZAF It is with great sadness I advise the passing of Air Commodore (RTD) Graeme Bernard Gilmore OBE in Picton on 9 December 2023. Air Commodore Gilmore served in the Royal New Zealand Air Force from 29 August 1956 to 30 June 1989 as an Engineering Officer. Air Commodore Gilmore began his training at Royal Air Force Station Henlow in Bedfordshire, England. Although an Engineer by trade, Air Commodore Gilmore completed training as a pilot and “earned his wings” in 1961. During his time in the Royal New Zealand Air Force, Air Commodore Gilmore served twice in the United States and once in Australia. From 13 November 1964 to 26 March 1965 he was part of the Royal New Zealand Air Force contingent that attended the Orion Spares Definitive Conference that took place in America. From 9-15 October 1966 Air Commodore Gilmore was part of Exercise FUSION in Australia. On 12 March 1972 he was posted to Washington to serve as the Senior Technical Officer to the Defence Liaison Staff, a post he held for just under four years before returning to New Zealand in 1976. In 1981 Air Commodore Gilmore was awarded his OBE for services to the New Zealand Defence Force. Funeral details are currently being sought and will be promulgated when known

In 1981 Air Commodore Gilmore was awarded his OBE for services to the New Zealand Defence Force. Funeral details are currently being sought and will be promulgated when known From Colin Hanson’s B y Such Deeds – Honours and awards in the Royal New Zealand Air Force, 1923 – 1999: GILMORE, Air Commodore Graeme Bernard, OBE. S78653; Born Thames, 10 Oct 1938; RNZAF 29 Aug 1956 to 1 Jul 1989, Res. to 30 Jun 1991; Pilot, Engineer. Citation Officer of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire (QB1981): Group Captain Gilmore joined the RNZAF as a technical cadet in 1956 and graduated from RAF Henlow as a commissioned officer in 1959. He completed a pilots course in 1961 gaining both a distinguished pass and the De Lange Trophy for flying excellence. He has since served in a variety of technical appointments on Bases, with the Defence Staff in Washington and in Defence HQ. In December 1977 he was promoted to his present rank and appointed to his current post as Director of Engineering in the Air Staff, Defence HQ. In every post Gp Capt Gilmore has demonstrated remarkable enterprise and the highest professional competence. As Director of Engineering he holds the top technical appointment in the RNZAF. He has responsibility for the maintenance and airworthiness of the entire inventory of RNZAF aircraft plus the smooth and efficient running of the RNZAF repair and maintenance establishments. The demands on technical facilities run at a high level, and though resources are often strained tasks have consistently been met. The successful introduction of new aircraft types and the management of several complex and technically advanced projects at a time of a severe shortage of skilled manpower have confirmed Gp Capt Gilmore’s high standards of leadership, resourcefulness and superior management skills. He has demonstrated great foresight in actively progressing new concepts for the sharing of aircraft maintenance work with civil industry, and in the development of an RNZAF capability to monitor aircraft structural life. Throughout his career, and particularly in his present post, Group Captain Gilmore has served with distinction and dedication. Errol
