Published in The Press on March 2, 2013 Keith Murray McGill was an air force early bird, of whom very few must still be with us now. He enlisted on 4 Nov 1936, five months before the RNZAF officially became an independent service. He became 36144 in Sep 1938 when numbers were first allotted, NZ36144 in Aug 1940 when the NZ prefix was introduced, and was then renumbered 70309 in Jan 1949, by which time he had attained flying officer rank. Wow, a great inning by Mr McGill, and also being in that early and havign a long career like that, He can really be considered one of the RNZAF's 'founding fathers' almost I guess, helping to build it up to what it became anyway. I wonder what trade/s he served in.

All communications to the Taylor Family, c/- the above Funeral Home. Dave, as you will know, his service number was actually 438028. For the uninitiated, this does not indicate a 1943 enlistment, as might normally be expected, but enlistment in 1938 as a member of the Wellington squadron of the Territorial Air Force. Numbers allotted to Wellington Squadron members were in the 437xxx, 438xxx and 439xxx series, and Auckland 638xxx and 639xxx, and Christchurch 539xxx. The third digit indicates the year of enlistment, except for Christchurch, where all members were allotted 539xxx numbers regardless. Errol

Yes indeed. I can think of only one TAF member still alive now from that pre-war era, sadly. Fred was one of the first flight engineers (in being that he was an engineer who was seconded for aircrew duties, taught in gunnery, and flew as crew on the Singapores). There was never any formal training for flight engineer trade in the wartime RNZAF, they al came from the riggers and fitters trades, and when not flying they continued in their normal jobs.

SGT (RTD) Douglas Arthur (Doug) SAYWELL E83310 E FIT RNZAF 8 Aug 1967 to 16 June 1987 on Saturday 2 March Christchurch. Messages to Saywell Family C/- 19 London Street, Christchurch 8013. A service to celebrates Doug's life will be held in the John Rhind Chapel, entry from Whitmore and London Streets, Christchurch 1300 hours Thursday 7 March. From Gordon Ragg 5 SQN Assoc. I seem to have rather too many of these notifications these days! - but one of the last two "original" members of 5 Squadron - Flt Sgt Fred Taylor - has died at his home in Titirangi on Wednesday 27 February 2013 aged 92.
Fred Taylor, 38028 Flt Eng, was a member of the team that went to Singapore and assisted the RAF restore and service four Short "Singapores", allocated to the RNZAF in October 1941, and fly them out to Fiji to form 5 Squadron RNZAF.
Fred flew one of the first pair which departed on 16 October 1941 and arrived in Suva Harbour (no Laucala Bay yet) on 14 November. They became the 5 Squadron originals when the Squadron was established 5 days later on 19 November 1941. Unfortunately his crew put K6916 on a reef a month later and it was subsequently cannibalised for spares for the other three!
I remember Fred as very neat and pleasant, 'sharp as a tack', and knowledgeable of our history. He was a regular attendee at our Association AGMs but deteriorating health prevented him getting to the last two.
A service to celebrate Fred's life will be held in the main chapel, Morrison Funeral Home, 220 Universal Drive, Henderson on Wednesday 6 March at 3pm. 5 Squadron representation would be greatly appreciated

TARANAKI LOST ONE OF IT'S GREAT AVIATORS A FEW WEEKS AGO BRETT CUDBY Due to a tragic accident in pursuit of his Hobby RC and Full size Aviator a real Gentleman taken far to early. From one of the Heli Boards. Fly Always mate. His Wake had a very generous portion of warm laughter- remembering Brett. Besides a large contingent from the local club- there were fliers from all over the North Island. In the chapel on display were several of his helis- plus a good selection of his planes- including his stunning Corsair. Our good friend Colin P. got up and listed the names of people around the world who had been in touch with him in the past week- all passing along their support to Bretts' family and friends. It was an impressively long list- filled with many names that us scale boys recognized. The final speakers were from the Taranaki club. They said that just 2 days before he died- Brett was part of the program at a outdoor venue. He flew with his usual flair and skills- and the crowd there really enjoyed what they were watching. Then as the dusk was settling over the field- Brett got out his wee quad rotor that was covered in lights- and flew into the night- until he was all out of batteries. When it was time for Brett to be taken out of the chapel- all of the RC Modelers were invited to form an 'honor guard' from the doors of the chapel to the rear of the hearse. The size of this crowd was very impressive- a fitting farewell Attachments:
