A very good film, especially for a low budget affair and for its time.
It is interesting that the RNZAF actually got involved in a film that was all about an anti-establiment movement. I wonder if they realised they were to be made out as the evil baddies.

I'm sure that they were the 'baddies' as such, that was the right-wing government that was in power in the movie. The RNZAF was simply carrying out a mission at the bidding of that government, as it would with any government. So perhaps an instrument of the baddies?

Thanks for the heads up Ken. I haven't seen this film for about 20 years so it will be good to watch it again and see some indigenous Kiwi Air Power in action!

On Maori TV this Sunday is one of the classic NZ movies, Sleeping Dogs. Released in 1977 it features both some Iroquois and Skyhawk action. The 2006 DVD by Magna Pacific has "The making of 'SLEEPING DOGS' an all new 65 minute documentary featuring interviews with Director Roger Donaldson". There are actually then-and-now interviews with several people involved. This includes the story about how someone camped outside the Minister of Defence's for 3 days to get his sign-off on using the Skyhawks (the RNZAF was dead keen), and Roger talking about the flight to get the rocket-firing footage.

I've got Sleeping Dogs on DVD, as well as a large number of other NZ films from the golden era which followed it. However, one movie I haven't got (which I'd love to have if it was ever released on DVD) is Came A Hot Friday.

Bruce, as far as I know, sadly Came A Hot Friday has never been released on DVD or video. It's sad as that is an utter classic. Another great frilm from that era is Carry Me Back, which features some great Fieldair DC-3 footage, and then there's The Race For The Yankee Zephyr too with some awesome flying in it.

I think came A Hot Friday may have come out in NZ on VHS as we watched a sequence from it for my Creative Writing course a year ago.

There are also DVD's kicking around too, but VERY rare. Only released in the US if memory serves. It should be released properly. I got a double DVD of sleeping dogs and Smash Palace, yet still not got round to watching it. Might do that soon I think. CAHF is probably my favourite Kiwi flick. I have a soft spot for the Dogs tail too. Oh, and The Navigator is damned hard to top as well. Have a gander here; www.nzvideos.org/A great site for Kiwi flicks.

Thanks for that info on Came A Hot Friday, I stand corrected.
Just watching Sleeping Dogs now. Wow, nostalgia trip seeing Dougal Stevenson reading the news. Those were the days.

Good god, Dougal Stevenson...... That's it, I have to watch it again. The only time I used to pay attention to the news in those days was during the Falklands war and the Santa tracker on Xmas eve.

Wow those shots of the Skyhawks filmed from the cockpit are awesome, especially the rocket firing shots. I wonder how much more unused footage there was in the rushes, and where it is now.
the Wockas looked awesome too. You're right, they were shiny and bright back then. Nowadays they look much more warry and cool.

What were those jet thingies firing rockets? Must have belonged to some war-mongering nation? LOL

Wow those shots of the Skyhawks filmed from the cockpit are awesome, especially the rocket firing shots. I wonder how much more unused footage there was in the rushes, and where it is now. The rocket shots are very impressive, considering that he couldn't use the viewfinder. I got the impression from the doco that there were few more Skyhawk shots, there may be more if the wokkas.
