Did anyone else see one of the police helicopters acting strangely over hobsonville today?
I was driving home from work in the traffic, and was watching the helicopter circling over hobsonville. It seemed to do a bit of a funny turn, then descended really quickly. I half expected to see smoke, but as i got up to hobsonville i saw that it had landed on the paddock next to Hobsonville where the horses are kept. Engine still running, and a very strong smell of helicopter fuel. As i drove past, having as much of a look as i could, two police cars with sirens on turned up...
Anyone else hear or read about this?
Odd or what?

The maneuvering you described sounds like an autorotation? Perhaps one of our more helicopter-knowledgeable members can enlighten us.

Wasnt an auto, I live nearby and it circled for 2-3 minutes before setting down, then heard the sirens of arriving cars. I assumed it spotted an emergency and decided to set down as it could see it would be a while before cars could arrive. Took off about 5 min after cars turned up.

I thought it was an emergency too, although when the police cars turned up the helicopter was still running, and the pilots were still in it. There were no vehicles anywhere near it when i drove past, apart from the police car that turned up when i drove past it. I thought it was very odd. The fuel smell was definitely from the police helicopter. There was no other turbine's nearby to make that smell, and i've never smelt it around that area before.

I would have to say in the absence of any other info , that it sounds like an exercise of some sort . Not sure why the smell of fuel would have been so strong ( perhaps just the weather conditions ) but the fact that it took off again shortly afterwards suggests there was no fault with the machine .

Perhaps they had arrived to have a coffee break with the "Motorway Patrol" guys! We have just started getting that over here but I think its a bit tame (theyre so polite!) in comparison to "Road Wars"! Mind you most of your motorists are more polite too...
