The following information comes from a recruting leaflet sent out to a potential member of the RNZAF in February 1940, explaining what they could expect form the job. It's quite interesting.
1. PERIOD OF SERVICE
Enlistment for service in New Zealand or overseas for the duration of war and until such time as he can be demobilised.
2. AGE OF ENLISTMENT
Candidates, preferably unmarried, should be within the ages of 18 and 35 years.
3. QUALIFICATIONS FOR ENLISTMENT
Applicants must fulfil the following requirements
(a) Produce satisfactory references
(b) Be physically fit according to R.N.Z.A.F. medical standards
(c) Be up to the required trade standards and have passedthe sixth standard or had equivalent education
(d) Be British subjects
(e) Have the required experience in the trade in which they wish to enlist.
4. GROUPS
The airmen of the Royal New Zealand Air Force are classified into five groups, as follows:

5. RATE OF PAY per annum, plus rations and quarters:
NOTES:
(i) Special pay is granted as follows:
Crew Pay - 1/- per day
Chief Cook - 1/6 per day
Drivers - 6d - 1/- per day
Cooks 1/- per day
(According to Service)
(ii) Wages tax is assessed on annual pay plus annual value of rations, fuel and light, or the allowance granted in lieu thereof
6. ADVANCEMENT AND PROMOTION
Reclassifications (to higher rank) and promotion in the service are subject to the passing of trade tests and appropriate examinations. Promotion above the rank of Leading Aircraftman, however, will be only to fill vacancies in the authorised establishment.
An airman may change his trade during his service providing:
(a) There is a vacancy
(b) He is up to the trade standard required, and
(c) He is recommended by his Commanding Officer
7. ALLOWANCXE IN LIEU OF QUARTERS, RATIONS, FUEL AND LIGHT
An airman is normally provided with free quarters, rations, fuel and light, but where no quarters are available an allowance of 2/6 a day is made. A married airman when occupying married quarters will pay rent and receive the allowance of 2/6 a day referred to above but will not be entitled to draw rations.
8. GRATUITY
A gratuity of £20 for each year's service will be paid to an airman posted to the Reserve on completing his period of service on the active list.
9. LEAVE
Warrant Officers, non-Commissioned Officers and Leading Aircraftmen may be granted 21 days' leave per annum and aircraftmen 18 days, inclusive in both cases of Sundays and public holidays, subject to exigencies of the service.
10. MEDICAL TREATMENT
Free medical treatmentis provided subject to the Regulations
11. DISCHARGE AND RETIREMENT
An airman is not entitled to his discharge in time of war
12. UNIFORM AND CLOTHING
During the period od service airmen will be provided with all items of uniform.
13. MARRIAGE
Permission to marry will not normally be granted to an airman until he has reached the age of 25 years, and has completed 3 years' service. No married allowance is paid.
14. TRAINING OF TECHNICAL AND ADMINISTRATIVE GROUPS
Recruits in Groups I to IV will be required to undergo a course of training varying in length from 10 to 28 weeks. They will be enlisted as Aircraftmen 2nd Class in the Trade Group in which they are selected and receive either rations and quarters or an allowance of 30/- per week in lieu thereof. On completionof the training course recruits will be trade-tested and ranked in accordance with results as scheduled below:
