I've been told that the Red Checkers display at Masterton last week was a take-off, one pass and a spgetti break and that's it. Why was it cut so short? My friends were very disappointed as they'd really looked forward to seeing the team. Heard National Radio's Morning Report talking to the guys from the Red Checkers about their then up coming Auckland Anniversary display. They made comment that they were disappointed that they had to bring an early end to their Masterton display because of weather/over head conditions. I guess a matter of what the eye on the ground can't see??? (speaking as one who was not there).

I was around and about and it was a pretty low cloud base, but normally there is a low display and high display. The base didn't seem low enough to stop a 'low' display. Or is that just the reds (sorry red arrows) who have time for that sort of stuff?

Being a new team this year they may not have had enough time to work up a low level display.

Being at Hampton Downs on Sunday I wouldn't want them to get any lower. My mate and I were standing down by the track at the bottom end and they were virtually directly overhead and they were close enough to be very impressive. I didn't take any photos as I have only a point and shoot but my mate has a Cannon EOS 450 and he got some really good shots. Ykato I see you were one of the naughty people parked on the side of the expressway watching and videoing the display. Nice Video. You were lucky Mr Plod didn't come along as there were heaps of them at the Drag strip up the road checking all the young hoons as they came out whilst us old F---s just cruised through when we left after watching the Historic racing cars.

Expressways in New Zealand are usually dual carriageway roads and may have full or partial control of access. They are generally high standard all-purpose roads that cater mainly for through traffic and do not have any traffic restrictions imposed on them. Intersections may be at-grade or grade separated[1]. Motorways in New Zealand have certain traffic restrictions applied, to provide a better vehicular traffic operating environment. The traffic operating restrictions normally applied under a motorway designation are: no stopping a ban on all animal, pedestrian and cycle traffic[1] en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Motorways_of_New_Zealand

Or is that just the reds (sorry red arrows) who have time for that sort of stuff? I stand to be corrected , but Im positive Kiwi Red did have a "Low" display , and a " High " display , as this was almost essential in the faster moving jets . As others have commented , the Checkers normal display is already 'Low " ish , so I really doubt they even have a "high " display . ( The " high " display has some manovers that require /use a lot of altitude , so cant be performed in a low cloud base ) , probabally doesnt really apply to a CT-4 ;D

"Ykato I see you were one of the naughty people parked on the side of the expressway watching and videoing the display." Ok Ykato your NOT naughty but you took a could video. I just wish I had a better camera. Now off the topic slightly with a bit of trivia. Which of the following would you prefer to buy if you had the money. They are both worth about the same. One we all know about ( I wish it was a better photo ) and the other you may not. It was taken at Hampton Downs and was driven by Chris Amon. Enjoy.

High flying daredevils it's pretty risky, not to mention dramatic. But the pilots of the Air Force's Red Checkers aerobatic team love their jobs. Joanna Davies reports from the sky above Auckland. Before you fly with the Air Force's Red Checkers aerobatic team you are told two important things. One: don't deploy your parachute unless you actually need it. Two: if you do need to deploy it, make sure you've jumped out of the plane, avoiding hitting the tail as you do so, and wait three seconds. The Red Checkers will be flying around the country until May, with displays in Napier for Art Deco Weekend and in Wellington for Anzac Day. Although there are no more scheduled displays in Auckland this season, aircraft will be on display at North Shore Aero Club's open day on February 26. Do the checkers pilots still wear the Breitling Watchs that were issued as part of being a member of the team...these were only for the season I beleive.
