I have created this thread after Dave said he was interested in aviation in the Nelson/Golden Bay area. This is for anyone to post news on aviation in the Nelson region on, wether in Nelson or not. Firstly, for people interested, the local Young Eagles club, belonging to the aero club, is meeting on Waitangi day to go up in a club aircraft and drop non-explosive bombs on a target on the runway. Young Eagles is for people ages 9-15 and meets once a month. Contact your local aero club for details.

Thanks Jasper. Are you a member of the Young Eagles? That would be quite good fun dropping bombs on the former bomber base.

I've been a member since December 2009. I didn't know Nelson was a bomber base? I have to find out more about sun city's history! We fly over to Omaka on the 27th of march to look at the museum again. It's a real privelige to be able to do that at my age.

RNZAF Station Nelson was established in 1940 and became operational on the 1st of January 1941 when No. 2 (General Reconnaissance) Squadron was formed there. They flew Vickers Vincents and Vildebeests initially, plus one de Havilland DH86 Express, and later were equipped with Lockheed Hudsons. They were the main aerial defence for the Nelson-Marlborough-Wellington region for some time till No.'s 14 and 16 Fighter squadrons also formed. They remained at Nelson till 1943 and then the squadron was moved to Ohakea and Nelson became a training base with No. 4 Technical Training School moving in from Rongotai.

Does anyone know anything about a WW2 era monoplane with Harvard styled cockpit? I saw it over the Collingwood St bridge going into land yesterday.

It would have to be a Harvard, or possibly a postwar Nanchang or Yak 52, I guess.

Bombing successful; we took the door off a cessna 172 and chucked the bottles out. Great fun had by all.

Sorry about all the monologue by me on here, but does anyone know about flights in the blue Aero Vodochody L-39C in Nelson airport, and if so, how much? It would be a massive help.

Flying doctor came through early this evening. Terrible reporting in one of the local papers, captioned a Herc as a C120.

Yes, bit of a difference between a C-130 and a C-120.

Crikey, that is so shiny it must be a health hazard. Let me guess, in the USA?
