Listening to RadioLive, making my lunch, and the news comes through. Sounds as though this is worse than the last big big one, one caller reported water gushing from water mains, another (a DJ down there) says the carpark was all cracked.
My thoughts are with all those down there, Cantabrian forumites sound off as soon as you can please!!!

Yeah it sounds real bad from initial reports, but given the (in)accuracy and hype of a lot of the media attention last time, it's hard to know whether to be real concerned or not.

This is dreadful, a 6.3 Magnitude.
Only this morning on Breakfast someone texted in saying they hadn't had any aftershocks there for ages.
Pictures on TV One right now look as bad as the big one. Bugger.
I hope all the forum family are ok.

My God the pictures on TV are shocking. Apparently the steeple of the Cathedral came down into the square. It's devastating.

I watched this on TV at lunch and was sickened by the sights. I could not beleive these were live pictures from NZ. My thoughts and preyers to all in Christchurch.

Iwas playing a sic-fi shooting game this morning but since lunch I've been unable to do anything else but alternate between coverage on channels 1 and 3. The pictures are horrifying, and TV3 is now saying there have been reports of "multiple fatalities".
I truly hope everyone is ok, I have both family and friends down there, and I have great memories of visits there after the 2004 Wanaka show.

I just got a text from Al Marshall, he's ok thankfully.
Watching TV3 right now of the rescue efforts at the Pine Gould Guiness building, a modern building, which seems to have pancaked. Gutwrenching stuff.

Apparently Christchurch Airport is closed and the terminal has been evacuated.
Not good at all.

We (thanks to my work) are showing 80% power failure across CH. Unfortunately this is looking much worse than quake #1. Good luck to all down there...

Many of the city's greatest buildings seem to have really copped it this time. TV3 just showed shots inside the Cathredral, it's totally stuffed. The John Godley statue in Cathedral Square is smashed. The top storey of the historic The Press building in the square has collapsed. The gorgeous old historic Provincial Chambers building has collapsed and people are trapped in it. Here's what it looked like: www.flickr.com/photos/snuffy/1894712798/A sad sight just now was seeing some beautifully crafted topiary animals in Cathedral Square that were obviously a nice exhibit, now being used as posts for Do Not Cross tape to keep people back from the Cathedral.

One dead at my sisters work, she and my neices are safe. One of my neices was helping pull people out of wrecked buildings and couldn't be contacted and my sister was frantic for awhile.

My partner just got home from work, we are watching the coverage and she was in tears when they showed the Cathedral.
Igot a txt back from a friend who volunteers at Wigram, no more news from him as yet. Great news Al, Pete and Marcus.

Any word guys? All the news sites are congested from Aussie. I understand the phones are down, no way to contact my cousin.
I'm gob smacked, can't believe the devastation. Cathedral Square? That's just incredible, can't believe it.
