Hi guys, I'm just working through some of my older models in the collection and replacing those which were done a long time ago and that I am not happy with now. I'd like to have a nice selection to take to the Forum Veterans day in May. Having completed my Ventura a few weeks ago my attention turned to the Grumman Avenger - since I had plenty of paint for USN 4 tone schemes! This is the Hasegawa Avenger, built largely out of box with a minor mod to remove the lower cowl intake to look more accurately like our TBF-1s (although still not 100% accurate I'm happy with it) I brought the kit on Trademe and found the box contained 2 1/2 Avengers plus a whole heap of detail bits. I used one set of Resin and rubber wheels on this, but the nice wing fold set will be used on the other complete Avenger later - maybe to do a topdresser! Decals are Aero Master and represent the famous NZ2518 "Plonky" flown by Fred Ladd From Bouganville in 1944. The next model wont be USN 4 Tone!

Nice bit of weathering/fading on that one Bruce, you've got that down to a tee. How did you find the Aeromaster decals to use, I've got them tucked away for a rainey day? Steve.

Nice work Bruce. That is one of my most favourite Avenger schemes, having worked on and flown in Sir Tim's TBM 'Plonky'. My other favourites are the other two 30 Squadron aircraft with Dumbo and with the flying kiwi on the cowl respectively. I asked my mate Brian Baber who was a pilot on 30 Sqn recently if he had nose art on his aircraft (which was coded B for Baber) but it didn't. If it did I'd have considered modelling his aircrfat. I have an excellent Accurate Miniatures 48th kit stashed away somewhere. I had intended to make Plonky but as everyone else does that scheme these days I might do something more original when i get round to building it.

The Aeromaster decals are by far the best of the WW2 RNZAF I've come across. the colours look pretty accurate and they are beautiful to apply, being very thin, but at the same time quite sturdy - dont know how, but they did it!. I have the "RNZAF WWII set" which covers lots of different aircraft, and they come with nice coloured diagrams which are very good. I apply them direct on to the matt paintwork as I personally don't hold with the spraying of gloss clear only to matt it down again. The decals stuck well, but I did use some decal softening fluid to ensure they conformed OK. Probably not necessary with decals of that quality though.

Ahh but I see this a late model Avenger (TBM-3) so its actually Tim Wallis' example painted as Plonky.(Yeah I know I'll go back to my corner......) Looks good though Bruce, hope to start my Avenger soon and hope to try a bit of weathering myself. (Mind you I'll be cheating a bit as i'll be getting advice from one Anthony Galbraith!)

Cheers for that very positive report on the Aeromaster decals Bruce, it sounds like I have the same set so I better get A into G & try some. Steve.
