About the controversy itself, does anyone know what constitutional limitations are in using the Navy to protect the oil exploration vessels against NZ (protesting) citizens? I thought only the police could use force?

Well, according to the article, if the protest becomes 'unpeaceful' then the Police will become involved and be taken out by the Navy to do their stuff.

That will be the same Orion Helicopter that was reported by Kathryn Ryan on Radio New Zealand National's 'Nine to Noon' programme a few months ago as finding the Jap whaling fleet. Kathryn's really accurate I her reporting usually so it must be true. So they have been in service for a bit.

iStuff managed to say Orion aircraft...? Stuff is not known for it's technical accuracy, and is somewhat leading the charge in declining mainstream media standards generally. It still has its uses, but authoritative it is not. As exhibit A, I present the article they ran last year after the Iroquois crash. They ran an article with the headline 'Helicopter had crashed before', which is still on line here as a matter of fact: www.stuff.co.nz/national/3629796/Helicopter-had-crashed-beforeIt details how the Iroquois that crashed on ANZAC day had been extensively rebuilt after an earlier incident, with the unspoken implication that it was somehow jinxed. Except it wasn't. If you check the serial numbers it becomes instantly clear that they weren't the same airframes, and so the whole story fails. I emailed them a couple of times about this not only being sensationalist, but also factually wrong, even including a link to ADF serials to save them approximately ten seconds of googling, but obviously to no avail As an aside I just saw nightline refer to the Iroquois involved in today's SAR as an 'Army Helicopter'....
