Just a heads up for the Aussies and those members based in Oz, the BBC's magnificent adaptation of Geoffrey Wellum's Battle of Britain memoir has just been released via SBS on DVD. I have a copy that an English mate recorded onto DVD from when this played last year on BBC2 and it's bloody great. The aerial scenes are glorious (with a little help from some outtakes of 1969's Battle of Britain ). I love it. Melbourne members, there's a few copies down at the Dymocks on Collins Street as I type this. Cheers.

Thanks for the notice, Mr Smithy! I only just bought the book a few months ago, but so far haven't pulled finger and read it yet. Book first, or DVD first - decisions, decisions? ;D

Either way I don't think it matters too much, the DVD production is different from the book, missing out the training part of the book entirely, and changing and simplifying a few other aspects of the book but that's to be expected when condensing the book into 78 minutes.
Whichever you choose you're in for a real treat. IMHO the book is the best Battle of Britain memoir I have read (and I've read rather a lot) and the DVD is simply brilliant.
You can't lose!

Cheers mate, I'll keep an eye out for that. Did you see the series called "Spitfire Ace"? It was on the ABC about 3 years ago and a cracker too, there was a follow up called "Bomber ace" iirc that featured a Kiwi girl following in her Grandads footsteps.

I've actually seen both of those as well and agree entirely, great stuff! As well as "First Light", SBS have just released other titles from last year's BBC's 70th anniversary Battle of Britain season on the telly. I picked up "The Polish Battle of Britain" and "The Battle of Britain" feature presented by Colin and Ewan McGregor. Both thoroughly enjoyable as well.

This is another reason I love this forum so much.
There is so much new material on avaition out there in DVD and book world, that it is impossible to keep tabs on as an individual - but with the massed consumer power/knowledge base of the forum, I actually can keep up with what is available.
WoNZ is like an ant colony - only brainier and maybe better looking! ;D

Better looking? I'm not sure what your basis for comparison is, Corsair. One film I love is "Dark Blue World", about Chezk pilots in the BoB. Speaking of which, I never knew that next to the Poles, Kiwi Pilots made up the largest number of foreign pilots in the BoB. Last week, in honour of Gagarin (and a complete fluke) I watched "The right stuff". Bloody incredible film it was too.
