Hi guys Well, here is the Academy kit slightly modified to represent an RNZAF machine. Cameron and I were working on this together but he lost interest in it and wants to start his Catalina. I said it wont get started until the Harvard is finished........here is where it stands. I have been trying to quickly finish it, but to be honest I have lost interest as well. So close, but I really should push on. I think it is the canopy that puts me off. I think I have learnt that with kids they loose interest quickly if big progress isnt made quickly, and this one turned into a bit of a mission. Dont you just love those Ventura decals!!! And his small but growing collection..... Thanks for looking

Looks like you're stuck at the same place I always grind to a halt at with a Harvard;- the canopy. I hate masking the things and I haven't got a steady enough hand to paint them. The rest looks fabulous it would be shame to stop there. Nice collection as well.

Thanks Gents, we appreciate the feedback. Malcolm Laird from Ventura emailed to say how much he like it too.
We put the seatbelts and seats in yesterday and will finish painting the prop tonight.
Cameron has the Academy Catalina out still but I refuse to do anything until we finish the Harvard (not that I am a very good example of finishing a kit before starting another!)
Does anyone have the radar pod for the Catalina that sits behind the canopy spare from the -5A version? We are going to do KN-K from Fiji and need that radar part.....we would both be REALLY grateful for any help.
Cheers Anthony

KN-K - was that from the postwar OTU there at Lauthala Bay?
I have a 1/48 Catalina in my stash. One day I'll build it and hope to make it as XX-W of No. 6 Squadron, The Wandering Witch.

I note the Short Flying Boat there. Was Lauthala Bay used as an international airport as well as an RNZAF station?

Teal did use Lauthala Bay, but Lauthala Bay doesnt have Rangitoto in the background......

Oh, that is Hobsonville? Or Mechanics Bay?

Definatly Mechanics Bay. The Solent has the British Union Jack on the fin so it would be taken 1949/1950, around the time the Solents arrived - the flag was changed to the NZ ensign soon after delivery.

Anthony and Cameron, very nice work on the Harvard.
Anthony, please don't take this as a criticism - as it's just an observation, but I'm wondering if Cameron loses interest because he can't see much progress happening due to the fact that you put so much precision, detail and accuracy into your modelmaking experience?
I don't know how old Cameron is, but when I was much, much younger than I am today, I really used to bash my kits together just so I could get out and play with them, and I think Mum & Dad used to hate being strafed and divebombed by Craig's latest 'masterpiece'! ;D
As I got older, I spent more time 'bashing' my kits together and slowly but surely I made better jobs of putting them together and painting them accurately.
I love those photos: thanks for posting, Peter. The blokes hamming it up in the bottom left corner of the second shot really made me laugh.

Thanks Guys Craig I think you are right mate. Also with an 8 yr old, it has to move relitively fast as well. I am trying to back off a bit, I know he is enjoying them, but I fear I am pushing him a bit hard at times. We were spraying the interior of the Catalina.....actually he did it all himself and had great control of my double action airbrush.....however me leaning over him put the pressure on. I have stepped back and he built an Italeri 1/72 Hellcat. No paint, just glue, and decals. He had a blast and like you, straffed us all until it ended up in a crash scene tonight. He is regluing it and wants to do his 72nd F4U-4 on a base with the gear up flying and wants to totally spray it without any help from me. At the same time he said he wants to carry on doing the Catalina together as he told me thats how he is learning. So its a learning curve for us both I guess. Anyway the Harvard is finished and he took it to school for news! He is right proud of it. I had to mask the canopy and he sprayed it himself!

Excellent model - always thought the following photo was the nicest taken of the real 1076 - shame it was not in colour.

Anthony, that Harvard is brilliant! Well done to your young fella, I bet he was the envy of the other lads in his class.
