"There will be 500 fewer military staff in uniform by the end of the year, including personnel from the Linton, Waiouru and Ohakea bases, as the Government begins its civilianisation of the Defence Force. The Manawatu Defence Hub has already had 59 jobs earmarked for civilianisation – 23 at Linton, 25 at Waiouru and 11 at Ohakea – which involves changing sworn military roles into civilian positions" www.stuff.co.nz/national/5069089/Defence-jobs-to-fall-by-500Is "civilianisation" a real word??

Do those who are losing their military jobs automatically become civilians in the same role or do they have to re-apply for it?
Can you have civilian grunts?

They probably have to re-apply for the positions, and then miss out on getting it to some 20-something who has an MBA from some dodgy online learning institution based out of Hicksville, Arkansas!

In the article at the top of the thread 'Assistant chief of personnel, Commodore Kevin Keat, said the affected staff would be encouraged to apply for the new roles after they were advertised both internally and externally' Can you have civilian grunts? Well not armed ones anyway.

So an army of unarmed civilian pen-pushers, that's just a Government Department isn't it? Perhaps down the track the Government will sell it as a state-owned asset.

My two cents worth....
Make 500 highly skilled personnel redundant (first round). 1400 in total!
Piss off the remaining staff as they are over worked due to increased workload and angry that their employer has shafted them. More staff leave.
Defence tells the Government they can no longer provide the required level of performance. The Government is embarrassed into an about face. Defence is forced to pay civilian contractors (those who have not moved on to greener pastures elsewhere) big money to come and do the job they were before.
All this for a total saving of about 13M!
When will the voters of this country learn? Getting rid of skilled staff = big money later down the track.
Defence in this country has never been adequately funded and various governments of all shades keep getting away with it.
End of rant ;D

Pablo, what has the NZ voter got to do with it? Successive Governments of all kinds have been laying off Defence Staff in cutbacks for around 20 years, voting the current lot out won't mean the next lot will do any better. The beancounters who force these decisions never get voted out of their jobs.

Getting rid of skilled staff = big money later down the track. But we are out of power and retired on our parliamentary pension to the Gold Coast by then, so no problem.
