Something that has always popped up in my mind as a query when I read about the action by P/O Jimmy Ward in climbing onto the wing of WellingtonL7818 to dowse the fire. He had a rope tied around his waist which was fed out by Joe Lawton as a safety rope, but why would a Wellington bomber carry a length of rope? Was this rope removed from the cockpit cover tarpaulin that he was usuing to smother the flames?

I was always under the impression it was the painter rope from the life raft

The rope supposedly came from the onboard dinghy.
I don't think Ward was ever commissioned was he? He is always known as 'Sgt James Ward VC' & I recall ages ago reading that he was KIA only a few months after his action that earned him the VC & that he never received the medal personally.

You're right, he was a Sgt, my mistake. And the painter rope makes sense, thanks.
