What is your favourite aircraft sound? Anything from a P-51 diving to machine gun chatter. My personal favourite, and all time favourite sound, is the 'buuuuur tik tik tik buuuuuur' of the Sopwith Camel.

Any Merlin. More than one Merlin is better.

Any Merlin. More than one Merlin is better. Amen to that, bro. Also the sound of a Skyhawk on a low level scream by. I can hear it now........ A Strikemaster would be an acceptable substitute.

Traditionally I would say Merlin, or in a pinch Allison V-12, but since they are a rare treat around here I am going to say anything with afterburners, the lower and louder the better:

Other than the sound of a 400hp fletcher over the house at low level at 5.30am, all aircraft sound is good! big radials (I like the Sea Fury at high speed) or big vees are all good. my personal favourite at the moment is a geared Subaru EJ20 with 3 blade ivoprop and twin exhausts!

I love the Merlin, especially fitted to the Mk V and Mk IV Spitfires but also on the Mustang.
he Sea Fury sounded pretty damed awesome, so did the LA-9, and I have to say I loved the sound of that Fw190 at Omaka. It was so loud and grunty at low level but at higher levels it seemed almost silent from the ground.
Skyhawks always sounded great except at 3am when you're trying to sleep at Ohakea. And The Iroquois sounds awesome though it's mainly the blades making that sound of course. Finally my other two favourites are the P-40 and the Corsair.

Actually, another which sounds great is the Boomerang in a dive. Nappy filling sound it is.
Cool, Tyabb airshow too.
And that OTHER airshow....

I miss the sound of the heavy 4 engine piston pounding birds, Globemasters used to make the air throb!

Your right , thats a sound the really makes the hairs on the back of your neck stand up . They had one ( I think the only one flying at that stage ) at one of the earlier Omaka shows , and I think I'd rate it as one of the most memorable displays I've seen ( even if I dont recall the year ) ;D

It ain't much to look at but I reckon it would rival a Stuka for the award of "Causing the most nappy changes". I'd love to see footage of these with the RNZAF Corsairs.

Big fat radials for me, preferably in a Corsair with Keith Skilling driving. The Sea Fury wasnt half bad either. Dave how about putting some WWII soundtracks on from the CD I sent down. The Gladiator sounded pretty rattling. The Meteor sounded like a tin whistle compared to the Me262, it had a 737 roar.

A skyhawk and Strikemaster through the farm valley in my teens in the Naki... But a close second for me was Oshkosh 2008 and the "Rocket Racing League" where a demo flight was done with a composite canard with a rocket motor in the rear end Lots of roar... 3rd place, Mustang TAF between the tower and the terminal (New Plymouth) low and very fast from behind the crowd, flown by TT Bland, airshow season late 80's. I know what you mean, efliernz. Turangi was great in the 80's. They'd scoot over my house from time to time following the Tongariro river. I lived at the Trout Hatchery on a rise and occasionally, if you were quick enough, there would be a Skyhawk near close enough to touch off the front porch.
Later on in Tumut, NSW we would occasionally get F-111's and F-18's going between Wagga and Canberra pretty low through the Blowering valley. Got a hell of a fright a couple of times.
Can't beat that kind of entertainment.
