Went for a bit of a stroll last Sunday across to the Harbour Bridge, and along the way one of my friends pointed out a little piece of Australian aviation history I knew nothing about. Some photos - Just a suburban park with some goal posts on it.........big deal!Hang on, what's this..........In 1934 when Kingsford Smith's Lockheed Altair arrived in Sydney on the Mariposa, it was reassembled, placed on a barge & towed across the harbour, then flown from Anderson Park across the city to Mascot aerodrome.

That is pretty neat. It's good to see the history is remembered.

geez give a Canberrian a camera and let him loose in Sydney and he finds stuff the locals (like me) didn't know ;D , great stuff Craig quick search shows how industrial it was around that area then. Crowd with Smithy's Lockheed Altair Anzac (changed that day to Lady Southern Cross), Anderson Park at Neutral Bay acms.sl.nsw.gov.au/item/itemLarge.aspx?itemID=6986

Ron, thank you so much for posting the link to the footage on your website, as I was wondering if there had been any film taken of the event. Interesting to note the paper placed over the name "ANZAC" on the Altair, as I gather the RSL wasn't too happy with him using that name at the time. I did note the paper had 'blown' off by the time he took off, so no doubt that ruffled a few feathers. Amazing how different the place looks now.
