The “Dumbf*ck of the Week” would have to be the reporter from The Wellingtonian who wrote an article about a new Control Tower at Wellington Airport, but who took a photograph of the Airport Fire Station thinking it was the Control Tower. Errrrrrrrr....the Airport Fire Station isn't even in the same Wellington suburb as the Airport Control Tower! Wellington airport to get new control towerBy KERRY MCBRIDE - The Wellingtonian | 8:39AM - Thursday, 18 August 2011OLD TIMER: Wellington airport's 40-year-old control tower is to be replaced. — Photo: Fairfax Media.WELLINGTON AIRPORT will be getting a new control tower next year.
New Zealand air navigation provider Airways confirmed the old tower needed to be torn down and that a new one would be built on airport land near The Warehouse shopping complex in Lyall Bay.
Airways operations manager Lewis Jenkins said the tower was more than 40 years old and a replacement had been on the radar for several years.
"It is an incredibly old structure and is getting to be [in] a bit of a state," he said.
The environment and weather had been harsh on the long-term asset, Mr Jenkins said.
"We need to make sure its replacement is in a spot where we can protect against that environment as best as possible."
Plans for the new structure are still being developed. Wellington aviation groups and the airport will be involved in the planning.
The intention is to begin construction in the middle of next year. During the building process, operations will continue at the old tower.
The tower will also be equipped with new monitoring technology.
"Our hope is that when the new tower is in place it will provide a better service to Wellington aviation than ever before," Mr Jenkins said.www.stuff.co.nz/dominion-post/news/local-papers/the-wellingtonian/5460283/Wellington-airport-to-get-new-control-tower

I see the photo isnt credited to the author, and was probably just taken from a file back at the office. You could add "lazy"to that header then...

I'd like to know why you can see 800 to 900 year old church towers stil standing and sturdy as ever in Britain, but here in NZ when it gets to be 40 years old it's dubbed "an incredibly old structure and is getting to be [in] a bit of a state,"
What is wrong with NZ'ers? People here build buildings and then tear them down a couple of decades later to 'upgrade'.

For better or worse, a distinct lack of sentimentality is part of the kiwi psyche Dave.

And a lack of forward planning for buildings with longevity.

It seems that most commercial buildings built nowadays are intended to be gutted and refurbished every decade or so, so nothing's really permanent anymore.
Anyway, Christchurch got a new tower, so why can't Wellington have one too? Gotta keep up with the Joneses! ;D
Will it have a "Wellywood" sign on the roof???

Craig, in the news yesterday was an announcement that a massive new Hollywood style film studios is to be built at Lower Hutt, in an area that is called Wallaceville. So is that now officially Wallywood?

So is that now officially Wallywood? Actually in Upper Hutt Dave. It's being built next to the Trentham racecourse. Proposed site top right. Trentham Army Camp bottom left. Old General Motors factory bottom centre.
