Yeah thats what I mean though, after numerous upgrades and they are needing replacement be a 5th gen fighter, as lets say all the 4/4.5 fighters were obsolete. "Could we afford 5th generation fighters?" <--- that is the question here

By wellingtons, are you refering to the Vickers Wellington? and if so were they advanced?
Yes, and Yes.
We were basically launch customer, as near as hell.
The RNZAF aircraft were built in the first batch after having only been approved for production a few months before.

The USAF decision is purely about the armed version of the Texan II called the AT-6, which was in consideration for transferring Light Air Support aircraft to "partner countries" e.g. Iraq and Afghanistan.
The RNZAF is focussed on the advanced pilot training capability, and while support to the other forces may flow out of the aircraft chosen, it isn't in the market for a "pure" armed COIN aircraft.

Yes the AT-6 is quite a different beast to the T-6, which is still in production for the US Forces and a number of overseas customers

Can't we compromise and convert NZ1015 to a glass cockpit?

So its $122 million for one F35A thats still cheaper than P8A poseidon (P3C orion replacement)$200 million or MH60R latest USN Helo $150 million. Dont think F22A is for export. It will interesting to see what the orions and seasprites will be replaced with come 2020 considering cost replacing with the like capability is out of the price range of the NZDF. Guess could be the case of fitted for but not with.

No you are right about the F-22 not being up for export, the US government put an embargo on its due to its technology that it boasts.

Not an aircraft to be dismissed for the RNZAF's future needs I would have thought? A better choice than a turbo-prop for CAS/Fleet Support training.

RNZN Fleet support /CAS target towing training is already is already contracted out to civi company based out of Whenuapai use a Lear jet or citation. Think they used P51 Mustang at one stage remember gunners doing air defense exercise with 50 cal blanks around 2008 on Te Mana while getting strafed by a Mustang. www.aal.net.nz
