Just had a C-17 fly over the house on final to Whenuapai. Photos to come as soon as my pc boots up!

Sitting there quietly watching Top Gear when I heard a large aircraft inbound for Whenuapai. Nothing too unusual in that until it started to get a bit closer and I noticed the engines sounded a tad different than normal so I glanced away from the telly and out the window only to see a rather large RAAF visitor inbound. Needless to say, a world record was set from the couch to the camera in the next room and thence back through the lounge to the front door. Looked lovely in the setting sun

Excellent work in capturing these shots Stu.
Is it full of oil spill gear I wonder?

Fantastic shots. Was in Alaska the other day and saw SIX C17s in the circuit at Elmendorf - at the same time! Gotta love the USAF - everyone else is just amateur.

The RAAF machine has gone off on a navigational sortie today, its been spotted doing an approach at Wellington, has done the same at Palmerston North and I think its headed for Hamilton next!

Does anyone know whether this similarity is deliberate? Perhaps both RAAF 36 Squadron and Enzo Ferrari admired Francesco Baracca...

I was listening to Radio New Zealand National's Pacific correspondent talking about the drought in Tuvalu, Tokalau and Samoa, and he is particularly scathing of the administrations there for bringing this crisis on yhemselves. He said that it happens every time the Pacific gets a La Nina weather cycle, the lack of rain is all part of it. He said that they have never had adequate means of catching rain water for long term storage and in terms of Tuvalu he says they really made a mess of things. A few years back when countries were being dished out their suffixes for websites, Tuvalu was given the suffix .tv but as it was unlikely anyone whould use it in the country they decided to sell it as .tv was much wanted. They sold it to a Californian company for, I think he said, $14 million. He reckoned this was the perfect time for them to set up a desalination plant and catchment tanks, etc but instead they decided to widen all their roads. The roads now take up 30% of all the land surface of the island, and due to that all the rain water runs straight into the sea rather than soaking into the land, and hence they're in a worse state than before.
So this is not a one off, if they don't fix it now it will happen again.

I wonder if there are any New Zealanders flying the C-17 with the RAAF?
