A query, someone will know:
If you have Sky, do you need a separate decoder for each and every set in the house, or is there some sort of local area network that lets you run them off just the one box?

Yes , you can run all TV's in the house from one decoder - but you obviously can only decode one channel at a time , so all have to watch the same sky channel at any one time . I just run a splitter between the decoder and TV , with coax which goes up into the ceiling . This then connects with the coax that feeds all the other TVs ( via another splitter ) . The sky signal then just becomes another signal the all the Tvs can recieve .

Peter, Lumpys answer is the best bet. However because of a stuff up by the electrician wiring my place I couldn't do that but the problem was solved with a wireless connection which works perfectly and I can change channels in either room.
Sweet. ;D
BTW will reply to your question next week!

They do provide a system so that the TV's can run on different channels in different rooms, designed for motels, but it's a much more expensive option of course.

Have you been forced into exposure to Downton Abbey too Peter? We should set up a bloke's meeting for when these chick things are on.

I'm sure I've seen ads for 'get a second tuner for less than the cost of another connection'. By the way, if anyone is thinking of getting a new TV, and recording Freeview directly off it to an external drive, check how many tuners the TV has. We found when we disconnected our separate Freeview PVR (2x tuners, own hard drive etc) and started using just the TV that the TV's single decoder was surprisingly limiting. If something was being recorded, our ability to channel-surf, set up new recordings etc was much restricted. So we hooked the PVR up again (rather than putting it on Trademe), and cleaned out my laptop's hard drive to the extra USB drive we had bought.

I used to (when we had one box)split the cord so I could watch a movie in my room, but half way through watching a movie Mum would switch the channel to UKTV from the living room and I would end up watching EastEnders.

When you upgrade from Sky Digital to MySky HDi, they have a deal where you keep the old box to use as a second decoder for a marginal monthly fee, but of course you can only get an HD signal on the MySky box. If you want separate HD signals on two tellies, you need 2 x MySky packages, ie., no discount on the second one.

Thanks for the info.
We do not have Sky at this stage. I did have it many years ago when there was just three Sky channels and you either had them or you didn't. Ended up realizing that I was not watching the junk on them and sent it back after a couple of months. I spent the time instead compiling my NZ aircraft database, a much more useful resource.
However, Meredith is on the point of retiring from AUT and is making noises about getting Sky. Possibly looking forward to watching the daytime soaps.
When you have the choice between Masterchef Australia on TV1, Next Top model on TV2, Masterchef USA on TV3 and Jamie whatshisname on Prime I can see that even Doctor Paul or The Archers would be an attractive proposition.

Well we had Sky installed a few weeks ago. Costs runout at around $80 per month. Very little on it to watch. Tonight it went fizzip and doesn't go any more. Will probably throw the remote into the corner, let it lie for the remaining 11 months of the initial contract and then cancel it. Ho hum. Another over-promoted fizzer that just doesn't work.

They do sometimes need the the old computer trick of turning off at the wall , count to ten , then turn on and wait whilst it thinks/reboots .( that wont improve the content though )

If there's a problem with your Sky decoder they will come and replace it no charge. Generally find their service guys to be pretty helpful, one recently fine-tuned and upgraded my sat dish at no charge while here checking a fault with (and replacing) my box. Ditto on the swirtch off at wall trick (works 9 times out of 10) or use the reboot button (usually beside the Sky card slot).

My dearest beloved rang Sky today and got it sorted. It's all quite beyond me. I just sit and glare at it, while pining for the days of my Phillips K9 with rabbit-ears aerial.

If I could subscribe just to the doco channels, it would be worthwhile, but you have to get E! Channel and all that crap... I'm going to miss TVNZ 7 next year...

It would be nice if the providers supplied customers with technology that does not need to be reset. You wouldn't put up with a car that stalled all the time, so why a TV box?
Yes, TVNZ7 will be a loss. Are they turning it into another music or 'youth' channel? If they did away with the excessive news and played more documentaries I would be happy. Some of those production ones are fascinating, I never knew there was so much history and science in getting people to eat cereal!

We have a lot of skilled fellows on this site. A friend of my son who happens to be a TV installer got the V8 supercars live on channel seven from Aussie recently using a updated sky dish and a good freeview decoder. When you consider we pay $80 a month or $960 a year for stuff we don't watch, we can pay $ 400 for a freview' one off payment and with a bit of hashing we can hook into things we enjoy. Any suggestions, as long as my better half can watch coro my life is good !!!

I have a collection of aviation/war movies and documentaries and I been considering having a movie night now and then. Anyone interested? I live at Royal Oak in Auckland and am thinking Wednesday nights perhaps a couple of times a month.
