Resurrecting an old thread from 6 years ago.....
IIRC the Gold paint scheme wasnt sanctioned by the bosses or MoD until after it was painted (Correct me if Im wrong)
I have some photos squirrelled away at home somewhere that I'll dig out.
It wasnt a Milspec- aircraft paint that was used (automotive type)and definitely not airworthy and I remember the boys were constantly touching the paintwork up after each flight.

I remember that trip to Wigram! These shots also reminded me of the Instrument Flying hood. I noticed a few weeks ago the wires for the rear seat "curtain rails" when looking at the "Sleeping Dogs" air to air shots. These shots of '56 also clearly show the wires and the scrunched up white "hood" in the top shots. This curtain was pulled forward when the back seat pilot was rating/re-rating on instrument flying. I was trying to recall if this went away with Kahu because I'm pretty sure we never had the wires or the "hood" up with the new HUD & DU setup. Then again I didn't stay with the jets into post-Kahu operational flying so it might just have been a phase. Anyone confirm this? Don will no doubt know.

Wow, those are really beautiful shots of that Skyhawk, Junior, many thanks for posting them. I am guessing that is No. 6 Hangar that the Skyhawk is sitting in, given the Museum aeroplanes over the partition wall. Which means that would be my old section, the Fabric Bay, beside the Blunty? Looks like it. Or is that No. 7 Hangar? Note the Golden Eagle next to the Freighter. I'm not sure if this link is in this thread but here's the page on my website about this aeroplane: www.cambridgeairforce.org.nz/RNZAF_50th_Anniv_Skyhawk.html

I made some hoods while in Nowra for Kahu jets. It was a heavy black calico with some stiffeners and was only used to block the front windscreen. I think was HUD was unobscured as it would have been if in clouds etc.

I agree - great shots of the gold T-bird.
The original pre Kahu blind flying wires and hood was removed post Kahu. It was replaced with black fabric panels that velcroed onto the inside of the windscreen so the pilot couldn't see anything out the front but could still see out the side. There was a major change in how the IFR flying was done post Kahu. It moved from the back seat to the front seat as there was no HUD in the back.

Yep its 6 Hangar as 7 Hangar has Air Movements at one end(facing 6 Hangar) and the Restoration shop for the Museum at the other end (which was originally the Museum's display area.) Great photos of the Golden Skyhawk, thanks for sharing!
