Great pics, and yeah the HN90 sure looks big for a helicopter. Very smart. Do they fit in a Herc then? Or do we need to borrow a C-17 to move them any real distance? Can a C-17 take 2? Nope they won't fit in a Herc. To tall at least I think 2 will go in a C-17, but not 100% sure. One big problem will be how to get these helicoters anywhere overseas in a hurry

They can fly them long distance though, unlike anything we have now. I read one can fly comfortably to Fiji without a refuel, so they should easily cross the Tasman, etc.

Best option will be Canterbury, if it is available! www.airforce.mil.nz/projects/nh90/specs--nh90.htmRange 780km (420 nm) with internal fuel, range 1260km (680 nm) with aux fuel and endurance 4.45 hours on internal fuel. I will let someone else measure the distances around the Pacific/Tasman to see what it can or cant do. And dont forget the 60 knot headwind when heading west!

Here are some air distances:
Auckland - Suva 2,112 km
Auckland - Sydney 2,154 km
Auckland - Norfolk Island 1,078 km
Norfolk Island - Sydney 1,673 km

I Think Canterbury can embark 4 NH90s (which is half the NH90 fleet anyway)Otherwise hitch a ride on an aussie C17 or charted Antonov. But as far as the future joint amphibious force goes Canterbury will be the main platform. Attachments:

So they should be able to fly NZ-Norfolk-Lord Howe-Australia?
"We're gonna need a bigger boat!"

Still 300km's better than the Iroquois. Said it before but I'll say it again, Nice to see the NH90's arrive but it'll be a sad day when the Huey's get mothballed.

That day is still some five years down the track.

Perhaps they'd get there with a tow rope behing a Herc?

Could a pair of Hueys lift one? Tie a piece of string between them?

Perhaps they'd get there with a tow rope behing a Herc? Well Dave, something along those lines. If we got one Herk and modified the external fuel tanks with a hose / drogue and put a boom on the NH-90, the herk could refuel it on the way over. They must have thought of putting a boom on it for the future or some engineer playing around with ideas. anyway, have they got them out of the hangar yet and airborne, must be someone from Ohakea here.

They had a drogue and refuel kit for the A4s and I thought that could be done from the C130s as well as buddy refueling. Didn't the RAAF do it from their C130s as well as the old 707s? I know that USAF do refuelling from C130s like that. Does anyone know if any of the NH90 customers have asked for a large dildo, oops I mean refueling probe, to be fitted to their aircraft?

I think they can be used for hover inflight refuelling only at this stage, but......

I've been sent a video of what looks like a German or a Dutch NH90 doing a low level climb, what looks like a torque turn off the top and attempting the big loop pull out at the bottom. Nek minnit it joins the U Boat service. I'll put it on You tube and post the link later. EDIT: This is link to video

I am not sure the RNZAF could afford to display them in that style. It would make for an expensive season. Do they have to go through that in the practices also ?
