Dont think I will wait until next year. My resolution right now is to have a prostate check after being told today by a friend that he is terminal .Months ago he had all the treatment and now it has moved into the bones , its all a bit scarey .At 63 he is entitled to feel shortchanged in the stakes of life , so guys dont stick your heads under your wings, get a check.

Just to follow onto that, it kills more than breast cancer does, yet has a fraction of the publicity. Man up and get it done. We are indicative of the group at risk, generally speaking.

Is it free like all the womens' check ups are? What age do people have to start getting checked?
Sorry to hear about your friend Bruce. Cancer is all too common these days sadly.

Good advice mate. Thing is, as blokes we are less likely to go for a check-up than a woman if 'something feels wrong'. Well don't be! Your doctor is a professional who has seen it all before. Anyways, these can be done with a blood test now so no more finger up the bum business. If something does not feel right, chances are it's not so go and get it checked! I've lost too many friends/family to cancer to not worry about these things.

Had my one done last week, it was the finger up the bum version, took about 1 minute to get the all clear, well worth it ! I did mine as part of a regular visit I do to have medications renewed.

That is, ofcourse, if you like the finger up the bum approach ;D
Reminds me of a prank we pulled with another male flight attendant on arrival back into Auckland when the customs guy was putting gloves on in front of us...

30 seconds with a well greased finger up yer bum is better than the rest of eternity being dead!

I believe that we should have the PSA test as well. Having said that there are diverse opinions among the medical people. One group says that men can test positive but live a normal life for a very long time and that the cure can be worse than the complaint. Time to investigate that if a test returns positive I say!

Had mine for the first time the other day...however during the procedure the lovely doctor had BOTH his hands on my shoulders. Not entirely convinced of his qualifications there...

Dave, I have been told that once you are 40 or older you should get your prostate checked. I had mine checked a few years ago after a blood in urine scenario. It's not pleasant but as alluded to earlier, better to experience 30 seconds of discomfort than not be here at all.

Bowel Cancer
With a history of bowel cancer in the family I have a regular colonoscopy which of course entails a digital prostate examination to check for enlargement. I do a serum PSA yearly when I have my thyroid levels checked.
In spite of all this, I'll probably get hit by a bus this afternoon.

Step ahead of you there, kemo sabe. Down here they do something a little more discrete, a blood test to monitor potential indicators. Must say, I was a little relieved.

Ross
