I know that sadly our society continues to decline all the time but I am totally sickened and outraged by the cowardly attack on the poor five year old girl who was sleeping in a caravan at Tuirangi. She was badly beaten by an intruder who entered the caravan where she and her brother were sleeping, while their parents were only a few metres away in the camp ground building on the internet.
The mother returned to the caravan to find the door locked and through the window saw a man on top of her daughter assaulting her. The poor woman ran for her husband and in the short time before they returned the bastard got clear away.
It is even more sad and terrible that the family are tourists visiting our country. I feel ashamed for New Zealand that such a thing can happen. The poor little girl is fighting for her life in Waikato Hospital with head injuries, while the police hunt for clues of who the man was.
i hope to goodness that the poor wee girl recovers, though the whole family will never reaslly recover from it. And I hope they get the utter piece of crap who did this.

Let's hope they catch him and not only let the Law deal with him but let the other prisoners deal out a second justice.

I felt sick when I heard this on the news today. It's embarrassing to be a New Zealander when this sort of thing happens. It is sick and I also hope they nail the prick.

I was driving my car when I heard the news and I almost had to stop as I felt physically sick. There will be intense interest in the sentencing when that occurs. The only certain things are that he will be caught because the police will pull out all the stops and that the sentence will not match the crime. I would think nothing short of 25 years before parole consideration should be the minimum. And he should be held in solitary confinement but that won't happen because it would be considered inhumane in the current thinking of our world.
I will write to my local MP about it.
And in this mornings paper I read that a supposedly drunken lout has managed to seriously injure two little kids who were wallking along the footpath and it was on a straight stretch of road, then the prick didn't even have the guts to face the music and tried to run away.

I personally have had a gutsful of the treatment of children in this country fullstop. The arsehole who did this needs to be executed by hanging. The do gooders in our soceity who keep bleating on and protecting these arseholes rights need hanging as well. Wake up New Zealand and smell the roses here....this is disgusting beyond words. Find this arsehole and kill him...simple!
And while I am hot to trott on this subject those poor children this week that were tortured and beaten by their mother. I read with a tear in my eye there victim impact statements and it made me sick. The mother is a pure monster and so are CYF for putting the girl with foster parents who abused her. CYF should be held accountable here as well and those in that department should face justice for there actions. It's about time we got real tuff on Government departments who put our in danger children in even more danger...again Justice needs serving.
Any arsehole who does this to children and anyone protecting the arseholes rights need hanging!

As a local, with police friends, it's a high probability the culprit's local, too. I'll be highly surprised if the troll ever makes it to court. Turangi may have a high Maori population and lively gang activity yet there's still a huge community feeling. Especially against this sort of brutality. One or two known deviants live around here. My 'source' says they're aware of them, and of the usual suspects/troublemakers/recidivists. I don't doubt the Boys in Blue will try to snaffle the low-brow thug before he suffers barrack justice at the hands of the higher-principled demi-monde. Utu still works around here.

I think 99% of the criminal population would be sickened by this too. Would be "interesting" if the perp was put into general prison population... the crims would provide justice the system couldn't. It seems sad that a dog that succombs to instinct and bites a child gets put down - a "human"(to use the term loosely) will get 3 square meals and a roof over his head. It really is time to take the hard line on these sub- humans. Great to see the rest of NZ being so supportive to the victims though, true Kiwi heart!

I was on a prison run one day and this one inmate turned up in his own van 5 minutes before the rest turned up. He was promptly seated at the rear of the aircraft with three guards around him. I asked why he got such special treatment and they said I wouldn't want to know, except it was for his own safety. I hope this perpetrator gets the same fear.

I can tell you for a fact this sort of thing isn't isolates to NZ, or Turangi. Read of the story where a bloke threw his 2 year old off the westgate bridge. I lived in Turangi for about 10 years and can tell you that at that time, General was right on the money. Probably not wise to say too much about that.
I do not condone the state having the power to take life but I do condone harsher sentencing. I read some of the goings on and it sickens me the time these sub humans get. It has indeed become a nanny state, not only should the foster parents be done, Raptor, but the ripple should go right through the ffodchain to the top. That's where it starts, the PM.

One of the reasons for sending someone to prison ( asside from punishment for a crime , and to act as a deterrent to others ) , is to protect society from that persons actions , and I think that fact is often lost on the "PC brigade ". Too early to say what this case will bring , but I"ll bet there will be things such as " insanity " and /or " unfit to plead " mentioned .

The prick that dumped his daughter off the westgate tried the same thing, pleaded insanity. After a month in prison he mysteriously wound up in hospital and started pleading for isolation. Not sure what bought that on.
Way I see it is you are loony you get 25 years in a max security psyche ward, if you are guilty, 25 years in prison. Either way we don't need people like this on the streets.

Both this case and the mother who beat and tortured her children leaves me sickened. As a country we should be demanding the "Death Sentence" for this creep. Also the staff member at CYF who was responsible for putting an already in danger child into foster care with abusers should be sacked and named and shamed....in my eyes they are a crimal against children themselfs. Too many to gooders that care too damm much about the crimals rights. I dealt with a situation that I reported to CYF and can tell you that GOVT Dept has big issues and I would not trust them in any way shape or form. The parents of three under 5 children had a tiler come to repair tiled bench top....job was 30 mins max,on tilers arrival the parents did a runner for the whole day....the tiler was left has baby sitter.....no food what so ever for the children. This was reported to CYF....the family were Fijian....CYF response..."that's their culture and ways of how they do things...they did nothing wrong as parents". We have some real issues in NZ and they will not get any better until we grow some balls.

There is no point in sentencing a convict to 10 years if you are going to let them out in 5 for good behaviour behind bars. And for those who repeat offend, special isolation cells for a minimum of half that term. Bricks, one window with bars, a single bed, no TV, no phone, no internet. Another option to the death sentence is flogging. I wager there are very few repeat offenders in Singapore.

Great news, Police have just announced that they have made an arrest.
I feel sorry for that team of police who have had to work through their Christmas break to get this evil creep.

I feel sorry for that team of police who have had to work through their Christmas break to get this evil creep. Thats what they do. And it shows their true character when they volunteered to come in and do it. Great result, although I do sense that given the offender's age true justice will not really happen.

I was in Melbourne when this attack became news and it is hard to describe how disgusted I was then and still now. That little maggot is 16 years old and I know he will be tried as a child. However, I would like to think that he is dealt to as an adult offender in ALL ways and means. Please for once, can our judicial system make an example of someone to such a level where all NZ sits up and for once everyone can agree that justice was served. Again, may I be one of the first to publicly thank the Police for what they have done to find and arrest such a vile piece of shit.
To the family, I hope they can enjoy what is left of their holiday and I know that they will get to see all the good that NZ has to offer.

Does the sentence depend on the age of the perpetrator at the time of the crime or can the trial be delayed to ensure he does time? Because a meeting and committee and youth correction is not enough in this case.
