My dad has just handed me a peice of paper with all the squadrons my Grandfather served in as an avionics technician (except for 24 sqn, in which he was a parachute packer) over the course of, and after the war. His name was Arthur George Brown.
24 (?) Sqn, Comms Sqn based at Hendon 1939-1940
609 Sqn, Spitfires based at Middlewallop, Hampshire 1941
11 Fighter group, Spitfires based at Biggin Hill 1941-1942
62 Sqn, DC-3s (transport command) based in India and Burma Until end of war (no specific date)
RNZAF 75 Sqn, Canberras based at Tengah, Singapore 1960-61
Thats what I read, at least. I'll do a bit more research on him, it might be interesting.

Good moaning OC, Your grand-dad served in interesting times. One correction if I may : No.609 (West Riding) Squadron never flew Beaufighters. Spitfires from August 1939 to April 1942, when the squadron began re-equipping with the Hawker Typhoons they operated until disbandment in Germany in September 1945. And a clue as to when he may have been with 62 Squadron... This unit was operating Hudsons in Burma until May 1943 when it was withdrawn to India to re-equip with Dakotas. It continued to fly Daks until disbandment at Mingaladon in Burma in March 1946. www.rafweb.org/Sqn605-610.htmwww.rafweb.org/Sqn061-65.htm

Jasper, a couple of things. No. 24 Squadron was I believe a VIP transport squadron at that time, and flew the rare DH Flamingoes. I met a pilot who flew them at thjat time, he even flew the PM and Churchill around during the Phoney War in France, but he's now dead. It remained a VIP squadron through the war and after the war became officially an international transport squadron, known as No. 24 (Commonwealth) Squadron from memory.
Also I don't think the RAF had the trade Avionics in WWII. Avionics is a conglomeration of the likes of intsruments repairer trade, electician trade and others but it wasn't formed as its own entity of Avvionics till after the war.
