Thursday nite ( I think) heralds the return of Top Gun. Say what you like about it now, but at the time that movie was superb. Ahhh the memories! I was a baggie on my first posting to Ohakea. We wanted to be Maverick or Iceman, wouldve settled go be Goose... Singing the songs during drinkies...Sad but true! So were my mates and me the only ones like that at the time?

Top Gun, is that the movie that has Tom Cruise in it or something. Have been meaning to watch it for a while now but always seem to be busy.
Just joshing guys, pretty sure i must have seen it about 50 times now. pretty well know it word for word. Just wondering, did the F14 not have dual controls in the back. Was asking cause of the opening scene where cougar lost it and merlin didn't bring it back to the deck.

Why give controls to a guy who's not a pilot?
That film was one of the big players in RNZAF recruitment in the late 1990's, and I am not joking. When asked what made them consider joining the RNZAF back in my day, most people would either answer that they'd seen Kiwi Red displaying or they';d seen Top Gun.
You know they are actually planning a sequel now, eh!

I thought there was already effectively a sequel, called "Stealth"

I take it, it would use Super Hornets this time around or be done entirely with drones

Tom Cruise can be the bald old guy that yells at the 18 year old pilots.

have seen images of Kelly Mc Gillus and she would not be up to the part now, over 50 and batting for the other side.

Yes, no offence to her but she has really changed since that film was made. But then she's also had serious troubles too.

Why give controls to a guy who's not a pilot? Relatively common practice in the versions of the F-4 that were so equipped (I'm pretty sure the F-14 was not though). I have often read accounts of pilots letting the back-seaters do air-air refuellings on occasion etc, and having a backseater who is capable of handling the aircraft is handy should the pilot become incapacitated. In the USAF F-4's the guys in the back initially were pilots anyway, before it was realised that specialist WSO's were more effective.

Tom Cruise can be the bald old guy that yells at the 18 year old pilots. The bald old SHORT guy that yells....or will he be wearing platform shoes again?? Just off tangent but sticking with Tom Cruise-bashing theme I see he's been cast as Jack Reacher in an upcoming film. For those that have read the books you'll know how absurd this is, given that Reacher is a behemoth of a man. Outrage amongst the fanbase of the novels. For me the sequel was Hot Shots! Very classy film, with top scriptwriting, acting and the flying scenes were just incredible. But I am a pretty simple kinda guy...

Remember the things that Hollywood spawned after the success of Tog Gun? Things like the series Supercarrier, which I really liked as an 18-19 year old. And there were several documentaries that came out about real carriers like Nimitz. Personally I'd love to see a big budget film based on a WWII British carrier fleet with Corsairs, Seafires, Fireflies, Avengers, Barracudas, etc. Now that would be really cool, and lots of roles for kiwis too.

With a nickname of 'Goose' you know that at some stage of the movie he's going to get cooked....
Here's some British Top Gun for you:
The opening pass by the F4's is pretty cool.
and another snippet, inspiration perhaps for the opening titles for Top Gun???
All pretty cool stuff, back in the day.

...and when Skyhawks still ruled the skies in the USN! Aren't they still being used in training by the USN? Just not owned by them.
